I was seriously overcharged for my first car rental (and I have disputed these charges with my credit card company -the FIRST time this has ever happened to me in my decades of renting cars). My second car was in poor condition and was NOT close to being NEW.

The staff were friendly and clear about the company policies. The insurance offered through the website excluded Texas so I had to call a special number for a special policy. Regardless Europcar refused to accept the insurance and charged as additional $45 per day(!) for insurance from them. The van had no sound in back, one A/C vent fell out almost immediately and a seat back was falling apart. The van was nice a big and fit all of us and our luggage, so overall it all worked out.

I am not the person who usually writes reviews, but this experience deserves a longer story, so please bear with me. We arrived at Schlomo Sixt a little after it opened, at 9.30, wishing to start our drive early. There were about 6 customers (couples or families) in the line before us. The service guy was superslow and there were only a few seats in the office, so most people were standing. Having understood that it is not going well at all, the service guy sent some people away to be serviced at a nearby Sixt office. It still took us more than an hour to get all the paperwork done. We had booked a mini size car (not the smallest option available, but on the smaller side) with automatic gear, the price estimate from Carrentals was 63 Euros for 3 days. Right before us was an older couple from the States who said they were not capable of driving stick, so the service guy asked me if were were okey with a larger car with manual gear. I said we were. “Honey, we’re getting a better car because we’re willing to drive stick!” I said to my husband. Little did I know. Our final bill for the rental was 170 Euros. Far more expensive than we expected. Okay, we agreed for extra insurance for 50 Euros, but there was another 50 of compulsory collision damage waiver that was added to the bill. Since we had no other options, we agreed to go with it. Then we had to walk to the other office too, which was located in a parking house about 200 meters from our office. There, we waited 20 minutes more to be serviced. Finally a guy showed us to our car! It was indeed larger. In fact, it was a 7-seater Citroen Berlingo, which is the ugliest car ever made and is also huge. Anyone who has ever driven a van knows how they drive - they are clumsy, the back mirror is useless and are terrible to park. It was also a really old model with none of the modern commodities - no bluetooth, no aux, only a CD player and a radio, which is useless in the mountains. On top of that, it was in very bad shape - the car was dirty, had large stains on the seats and smelled like feet. “This is not the car I rented,” I told the guy in the other office. “I would like a smaller car that is easier to drive.” “It is not so big, and also, it’s holiday season, so it’s the only car we have left,” the guy answered. So it was basically a take it or leave it situation. And the American couple had already driven away with our small, comfy automatic-geared car. There were some other errors that appeared only later during our drive. The fire extinguisher had broken loose from its mountings and was flying here and there on the car floor, having left small heaps of white powder everywhere. The left back window did not close and it sounded like an organ concert in the windy mountains. Oh, and something rattled in the right front door during driving. So how was my experience, you ask?

I had a major problem with the car. I had to pay for the tire to be fixed and was not compensated for it. In addition I tried calling road side assistance and no one even picked up the phone. This is absolutely horrible,
