Once again, I turned up at AVIS having booked an economical car - to be given a tubby SUV. I run my own business and when doing long miles, I try to keep the costs as low as I can. When I asked if I could have the car I had requested and that Avis had confirmed the day before, the agent said “I’ll cancel it if you don’t want it and you can go to Enterprise next door”. Call me ‘old fashioned’, but I replied “doesn’t AVIS apologize for the inconvenience and added cost that I will face with this changed booking”, but I was told in very short terms that Enterprise was next door and he was canceling the car. I added “I didn’t say I want to cancel it, I said I didn’t want this car - that why I booked an economical car” whereupon ‘John’ said he was calling the police to remove me. Astonishing customer service from Avis - they plumb new lows every visit. Their customer service in Meeting Street Charleston SC is an absolute disgrace whose only merit would be to film - and use as a joke training video. I calmly talked ‘John’ down from his cliff-edge of incandescent rage and took the tubby SUV which, I estimated, cost me an additional $25 in gas. Avis give me the wrong class of car about 80% of the time. The Meeting St Charleston office gives me appalling service 80% of the time. I’m a ‘Preferred Customer’! What in heavens name are you up to - AVIS?!
