First, Dollar and Thrifty are the only rental companies in Charleston that are off-property (10 minute shuttle), so keep that in mind. Others are all at the arrival area. I took the shuttle to the rental car location. Took 15 minutes to get me set. Lady at the counter was helpful, and she said she didn't know what car I was gonna get. She walks to the back of the lot to look for a car, then comes back and says that I'm getting a car on the front lot. Walked up with her to a Kia Soul. She said that was my car. i reserved and paid for a Full Size, so i told her I disagreed since that car definitely was below the class I reserved. She said she agreed, but that's the only car they have left. She left to talk to her manager. She comes back and says manager can upgrade me to a Jeep Cherokee, the only other car they have left other than an F150, but doing so would cost me $50 per day extra. I have been in similar situations where the car company ran out of the car I reserved, and they always upgraded you to the next level they have available for free. I spoke with the manager who then insisted that the Kia Soul is a full size car for them (Dollar) and that he can't give me a free upgrade. I asked to cancel my reservation at that point, and they asked how I was gonna get back to the terminal. I said back on your shuttle. Took another 30 minutes for them to cancel. I got on orbitz and was able to book a full size from alamo for basically the same price, and the counter at the airport got me a key within 5 minutes of me showing up. Horrible experience with Dollar and this location specifically. I suspect that this is the branch's MO...they are off-site, and you are forced to take a lower-rate car or pay the upsell.
