On the Avis website, it said they suspended underage driver fees due to covid-19. However, it did not mention that Avis in Alaska is TECHNICALLY a different company, so even though Alaska wasn't included in the exceptions list of states still requiring fees for underage drivers, Avis charged a fee. This was completely unexpected and added over a hundred dollars to our rental. We had no choice left because we were sitting in the Alaska airport without a car. Avis basically pulled a loophole trick that wasn't even in the fine print.

First of all, Fairbanks Alaska should have an indoor garage. Our vehicle was frozen solid. The car itself was an older model, no studs (and the roads were super icy!) But worst of all, when I returned the car 12 hours later, there was no one, no sign, nothing to receive the returned car or give me any guidance. I just picked an open stall, parked, and walked to the front counter. When I get there, after running through single digit temperatures, cutting it close for my flight, the counter agent Maria, rudely just keeps saying I can't close you out until I get a mileage. What's the mileage? I can't help you.. so I had to do her job for her, run back outside, with my luggage and in the freezing cold, to get the final mileage on the odometer before she would close me out. She already knew I was cutting it close to my flight time, and when I got back, she was taking her sweet time with a new customer, asking questions to him that I was never asked when I checked in, and didn't even acknowledge my presence. So I finally excused myself with the other guest and asked her to just take the keys and gave her the mileage and made it on my flight. She said she would email me a copy of the receipt, which she also did not do. I had to call her several hours later and ask for it, because I didn't trust her to not overcharge my account out of spite. It was not a pleasant experience.

Zero customer service skills-you feel like you are on candid camera b/c they could not care less about helping you. They make you feel like every question is a stupid question. We didn't even end up renting from AVIS-they were so rude and indifferent to us that we walked 15 feet over to National Car Rental where the agents were friendly and welcoming and rented a car.
