My experience with the pickup process was easy and efficient. The car, a Honda Civic was comfortable enough and although I only had it for one day and did not do that much driving it did not seem TO be very good on gas.

The only suggestion- Agent immediately said i would have to put down a $200 deposit since i was using a debit card- after she ran my credit It indicated I did not have to put down a deposit- I'd suggest clients are informed there may be a deposit after the credit is run at that time indicate the amount of the deposit needed- also she referenced areas by the airport early morning was ghetto - socially and culturally insensitive

This experience with Payless was about as bad as any car rental that I've ever had. But, I've only rented more that 500 cars in my long career of business and personal travel.
I had reserved a compact (Nissan Versa or equivalent) car. The reason I reserved a compact was for fuel efficiency and that's all I needed for my goals for a low profile, cold weather trip in New Mexico and Colorado. Upon arrival, I was told that the only car available was a (small size) Ford Mustang, a convertible, no less. The agent kept a straight face while assuring me that the Mustang convertible was a compact. The agent was polite, told me I could upgrade (about doubling the cost) to an intermediate, take the Mustang without any discount, or walk away. Without other options, I took the Mustang, drove about 1250 miles. Although the Mustang was fun to drive, I estimate that the additional gas cost of driving the Mustang was about $40-$50.
Bottom line: I don't plan to rent from Payless in the future.
