Your Guide to Vancouver, BC

On your next visit to Vancouver, get ready to experience Canadian culture and a rich maritime history. Also known as Rain City due to the high amount of precipitation it receives, this port town is a fine place to visit for both the natural surroundings of British Columbia and the more cosmopolitan setting of the city itself. The best way to make sure you see every inch of it is with access to a cheap car rental in Vancouver, Canada.

Touring Vancouver

One of Vancouver’s prized jewels is Stanley Park, which borders the downtown area. It is largely surrounded by water, though it accessible by car via roads that cross Vancouver Harbour. There are numerous places to park your car rental around Stanley Park, freeing you to hike, picnic, bird watch, and generally enjoy the beauty of nature.
To enjoy nature from a different—much higher—vantage point, drive your rental car about 5.5 miles north of downtown Vancouver. There you’ll find Capilano Suspension Bridge Park, home of the Capilano Suspension Bridge. The bridge itself hangs 230 feet over the Capilano River, bracketed on both sides by temperate rainforest. You’re in for fantastic photo opportunities from so high up; make sure you bring your camera.
After your sojourn through nature, head back to Vancouver. The H.R. MacMillan Space Centre is located right near the downtown area, and hosts a number of informative shows. Find out how astronauts live while in space, or watch a show at the Planetarium. Hungry? Within a few blocks of the Space Centre, you’ll find seafood, Japanese, bakeries, and even Afghani food. Additionally, if you’re a hockey fan, just 2.5 miles east of the Space Centre is Rogers Arena®, home to the Vancouver Canucks and a required visit for all hockey enthusiasts.

Beyond Vancouver

A Vancouver rental car doesn’t mean you’re limited to just Rain City. Pull out a map and explore other parts of British Columbia; for example, steer 40 miles southeast to Abbotsford. While Abbotsford is one of Canada’s primary agricultural providers, it’s also full of culture and adventure. Explore the numerous works of Canadian art on display at Reach Gallery Museum, or partake in some fishing or other watersports on nearby Cultus Lake.
For a real road trip, pack your bags and drive 140 miles south, across country lines to Seattle, WA. Shop for fresh seafood and coffee at Pike Place Market, or visit the technological and artistic marvel of Chihuly Garden and Glass, which is located right near the famous Space Needle and a host of other Seattle attractions.

The History of Vancouver

Vancouver takes its name from Captain George Vancouver, a British explorer who charted much of the Pacific Coast. Vancouver itself was originally known as Gastown, thus named because it grew around a bar run by “Gassy” Jack Deighton. By the 1880s, Vancouver had grown in leaps and bounds, partially due to the appearance of the Canadian Pacific Railway, but also because many prospectors headed up to the Klondike Gold Rush stopped through Vancouver to pick up gear. The city continued to broaden its value by getting involved in the lumber industry, as well as acting as a seaport.

The Weather in Vancouver

If you’re visiting Vancouver in the summer, you can expect average highs in the 70s and occasionally the 80s. This also tends to be the driest time of year, with less than 2 inches of rain per month. Winter is cool and wet, with average highs in the 40s and 50s and much of the region’s 45 inches of annual rainfall. You can also expect about 15 inches of snow per year, the majority of it arriving in December and January. Fall and spring are cool and wet, with pleasant days and chilly nights.
