Your Guide to New Orleans, LA

Come to The Big Easy for jazz, and stay for the delicious food. New Orleans, LA rests between the southern shore of Lake Pontchartrain and the mighty Mississippi River. This smoking city is home to spicy crawfish pies, world-famous beignets, and an abundance of brown pelicans, the state bird. The Big Easy’s location on the winding banks of the Mississippi means its layout is far from traditional in order to accommodate the river. The best way to ensure you don’t get lost in the maze of river banks and bayous is to brave the many one-way streets and obtain a cheap New Orleans car rental equipped with GPS.

Have Car, Will Travel

Life moves slowly in the South, but that doesn’t mean that you have to. With your very own rental car in New Orleans, cruise from the historic French Quarter to the stunning St. Louis Cathedral in no time. Whether you’re in town to celebrate Mardi Gras or to tour prestigious Tulane University, New Orleans car rentals are the most convenient way to take in everything on your itinerary.
One thing you definitely don’t want to miss while in town is a trip to the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, located just a mile from the Mississippi River. If you’re visiting during football season, head on over and watch the New Orleans Saints take on a rival team. You’ll be cheering for “The Bayou Boys” before you know it.

Cruising the Bayou State

Louisiana is a big state, and a New Orleans car rental is your ticket to enjoying a good time on the bayou. Eighty miles east of New Orleans is beautiful Baton Rouge, where you can tour the destroyer U.S.S. Kidd before exploring the city’s waterfront area. Alternatively, drive 120 miles north to explore the beauty and majesty of De Soto National Forest. This is the perfect spot for fishing, hiking, and generally getting in touch with nature.

Down in New Orleans

New Orleans has seen a lot of the course of its existence: French and Spanish masters, followed by a stint as a smuggling port during the American Revolution. New Orleans came into the possession of the United States in 1803, as part of the Louisiana Purchase, and its position on the Mississippi River ensured its importance as a trading post. During the leadup to the Civil War, New Orleans was a prominent stop in the slave trade. Though it was captured by the Union during the Civil War, New Orleans largely escaped the destruction faced by other prominent Confederate cities. The city continued to grow in the postwar period, eventually becoming a stage for the Civil Rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s.

Weather

You’ve no doubt heard that things can get hot in New Orleans. While that can partially be attributed to the legendary fiery tempers of the local population, New Orleans is also a regular recipient of wet, humid summers. You can expect temperatures in the 80s and 90s during the hot season, along with most of the region’s 60 inches of rain, so bring your raincoat. Fall and winter are much cooler and drier, bringing high temperatures in the 60s and 70s and a drop in humidity. Due to its position along the coastline, New Orleans does face flooding and damage from hurricanes when they occur, so keep your eye on the weather report during the summer.
