Kansas City Origins
Centuries ago, fur traders arrived in the area that became Kansas City. Always on the lookout for new ways to broaden their wealth, these traders established a path that linked the area with the Santa Fe Trail. Several small towns sprang up in the vicinity over the years, and in 1886 five of them combined forces under the name of Kansas City. It shares a name—and a border—with Kansas City, Missouri, though the advent of the streetcar made it possible to live in Kansas City, Kansas, while commuting to Kansas City, Missouri. The city adapted the moniker “KCK” to differentiate itself from the Missouri version, and the nickname stuck.
