Your Guide to Houston, TX

With a population of over 2 million people, Houston, Texas sprawls across some 600 square miles. While you can explore parts of the city on foot or via public transportation, you won’t want to depend on your sneakers or the bus to take you to every corner of this vast metropolis. Book a cheap rental car in Houston and see its surrounding areas at your own pace.

The History of Houston

The city is named for General Sam Houston, whose victory in the Battle of San Jacinto led to Texas winning its independence from Mexico. The city grew quietly through the late 1800s thanks to the appearance of the railroad and the jobs that came with it, but Houston really got its chance to shine after a hurricane devastated the nearby port city of Galveston in 1900. The destruction in Galveston meant Texas needed a new deepwater port, which prompted Houston to step in to fill the gap. Deepening its harbor meant more commercial traffic, which led to more people journeying to the city for work and play.

Get Around Town

A favorite event in Houston is the annual Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, which takes place in late winter. This event is the perfect opportunity to bust out your cowboy boots and test your faux Southern drawl. If you’re staying in the downtown area, reserve a Houston car rental so you can travel about 3 miles east to the Houston Museum District, or 5 miles north to the historic Bayou Bend in Memorial Park, as both of these areas are loaded with sites for you to explore. Houston is also home to the nation's second-largest Indochinese community, and its Chinatown is located about 13 miles west of the downtown area. Although you might be tempted to fill up on the local Asian-influenced cuisine, be sure to save room for barbecue. This is Texas, after all.
Rental cars in Houston make traveling within the city easier, but they are an absolute necessity if you wish to visit nearby attractions. Don’t tie yourself to public transportation or the kindness of friends and relatives; see the places you want, when you want to. Hit the beaches of Galveston by driving 50 miles south, or learn about the history of the Texas Revolution with a trip to the San Jacinto Battleground just 25 miles east of the city. Last but not least, the Johnson Space Center, located 30 miles south of Houston, is where N.A.S.A. trains its astronauts.

Hot in Houston

Houston’s humid subtropical climate means hot summers and mild winters. Expect temperatures to regularly reach 90 degrees and up during the summer months, along with high humidity. Most buildings in Houston have air conditioning—it’s been called the most air conditioned city in the world—but plan your outdoor activities accordingly. In winter, the temperatures drop to the mid-50s, and while snow is rare, the city does see the white stuff on occasion. Houston gets about 50 inches of rain per year, mostly during the winter, so make sure you pack an umbrella.
