Your Guide to Ann Arbor, MI

When you’re ready to travel to the southeast part of Michigan—a place renowned for its natural beauty—head for Ann Arbor. This beautiful part of the Great Lakes State is divided by the Huron River, and is home to the University of Michigan. See more of its 200 parks and its many commercial areas with a cheap car rental in Ann Arbor.

Around Ann Arbor

Steer your car rental to the University of Michigan’s North Campus, located on the northern side of the Huron River. There you’ll find the Matthaei Botanical Gardens, where you can explore 300 acres of gardens, trails, and even children’s areas. Hike, bird watch, and learn about local and imported flora and fauna, all in a beautifully maintained setting.
About 6 miles south of the gardens is Cobblestone Farm & Museum. This onetime working farm turned museum was built in 1835, and features a cobblestone farmhouse, a barn, and smokehouse, among other buildings. Stop by to learn about life in Ann Arbor during the 19th century.
After some time spent learning about the older way of life, head about 3 miles north to the University of Michigan’s Central Campus to watch a show at the historic Michigan Theatre. This onetime movie palace still showcases old and new films and live performances, and its ornate golden interiors are truly a must-see for anyone interested in architecture.

Beyond Ann Arbor

The rental cars in Ann Arbor don’t confine you to the city limits—why not explore the other parts of Michigan? Just 43 miles east of Ann Arbor is Detroit, which is home to history and several sports teams. Stop by the Henry Ford Museum to walk through a space dedicated to American innovation; its exhibits include car engines, presidential limousines, and a chronicle of American aviation.
Additionally, you can embark on a proper road trip to Fort Wayne, Indiana. The Summit City is 140 miles southwest of Ann Arbor, and is a perfect place to visit during the summer. Bring the kids to the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo, or develop an appreciation of artistic works at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art.

History of Ann Arbor

Ann Arbor came by its name in 1824. The land speculators that found it decided to name it after their wives, who were both called Ann. In 1837, the University of Michigan moved in, making the town an obvious choice for educators and merchants, as well as students. The arrival of the Michigan Central Railroad in 1839 further added to Ann Arbor’s appeal, as the connection fostered trade opportunities and additional population expansion. By the 1880s, the city’s growth had truly exploded, thanks to an influx of Greek, Italian, and Russian immigrants.

The Weather

Ann Arbor’s weather is heavily influenced by the close proximity of the Great Lakes. If you’re visiting in winter, expect temperatures in the 20s, along with about 58 inches of snow per year. Snow can fall as early as October, though November through February tend to be the heaviest months. Summer brings average temperatures in the 70s, though spikes into the 80s are not uncommon. The height of summer also brings occasional forays into the 90s. Summer is also humid and tends to bring most of Ann Arbor’s 37 annual inches of rain.
