Your Guide to Albuquerque, NM

A trip to Albuquerque, New Mexico allows you to discover the Sandia Mountains to your east and the Rio Grande rushing from north to south. The Duke City isn’t just home to naturally stunning landscapes, though; it’s also the Hot Air Ballooning Capital of America. Your own Albuquerque car rental is the best way to find out how this city came to hold all these nicknames and titles, and you can count on CarRentals.com to help you get around to do so affordably.

Explore Albuquerque

Once you’ve got your car rental, all of Albuquerque is available to you. Explore the charms of Old Town and stuff yourself with delicious corn tortillas. If you’re visiting in April, Old Town comes alive during the Fiestas de Albuquerque, which celebrates the city’s unique history and culture. If you like live music and a never-ending supply of food, this is the time for you to visit. A car rental means no waiting around for buses or cabs; if you want to go somewhere, you can do just that on your own schedule. For example, the Rio Grande cuts through the city, and offers numerous places along its banks to go canoeing or just relax in the famous New Mexico sunshine.
Speaking of New Mexico, the entire state is a beautiful place to visit. Why limit yourself to just one city? Rental cars in Albuquerque let you explore the area at your whim. The perfect place to hike is just 10 miles west: the Petroglyph National Monument. Fifteen miles north of Albuquerque is Sandia Peak, which is a great hike in the summer and one of the best places to ski in the winter. For a real treat, 60 miles north is Santa Fe, New Mexico, where you can spend hours wandering its downtown area in search of the perfect souvenir.

On the Camino Royal

Albuquerque can trace its roots to the early 1700s, when Spanish colonists settled down in a small village along the Camino Real, the trade route between Mexico and New Mexico. It changed hands over the years, going from Spain to Mexico to the United States to the Confederacy, eventually hosting the daylong Battle of Albuquerque during the Civil War. By the 1880s, the Santa Fe Railroad had arrived, though it completely ignored the actual center of town and instead set up a station 2 miles east. Albuquerque adjusted, building upward and outward to the station and growing around it. The part of the city that sprang around the train station has since been referred to as “New Town,” whereas the older area is, fittingly, called “Old Town.”

Sun and More Sun

Albuquerque gives new meaning to the phrase “Fun in the sun,” with an average of almost 300 sunny days per year. Even in winter, the sun is usually out and shining, though the temperatures may drop into the 30s during December and January. Spring visitors will find dry, gusty winds and rising temperatures, eventually giving way to hot, calm summer days in the 80s and 90s, so bring sunscreen. Be warned, though: Duke City deals with thunderstorms during the summer, so make sure you bring your umbrella along. Fall in Albuquerque is cool and dry, though things can get wet as winter approaches again.

The Trip of a Lifetime
