• ALAMO hired a poorly maintained car with many kilometers for hire, unsuitable for the roads of Costa Rica. • Through this negligence ALAMO put our lives in danger and it took a stroke of luck for us to get out of it without any injury. • On February 4, 2020, in the middle of the afternoon, we left UVITA towards SAN GERARDO DE DOTA (114km, 2 and a half hour mountain trip). • Already around 6pm, the engine heating we had to take a break. • Around 7 p.m. 10 km from the hotel, we started a very severe descent. • Less than a kilometer from the hotel, the GPS (it probably saved us!) Sent us to a private property. • Realizing our error we wanted to turn around. • The brakes, which for a few minutes had been giving signs of weakness, have failed and we have finished our U-turn. • Fortunately, the GPS deceived us, otherwise we would probably have fallen on a precipice which would have been fatal. • Fortunately, the brakes were released during the U-turn at low speed. • We did little damage to the car (front bumper, possibly front fenders?) And almost nothing at home (a table, 2 crushed chairs and traces of paint on the wall) • The February 12, we received an email from ALAMO Costa Rica with 2 appendices that we were able to open and an invoice of $ 1,126.54. It corresponds to the debit of € 1,077.72 dated 12/02/20 on the card statement at the end of February. • We asked for clarifications by 2 emails to ALAMO, We have had no response to date. • We received a phone call on February 13 or 14 from ALAMO or its service provider for a satisfaction survey. • We explained the concerns we had. The investigator told us that we would be contacted by a French speaking ALAMO person. We have been waiting for his call for MORE than a month.

The staff at Dollar was very friendly! Just something like paying extra if you have something for it and it comes to court, if you are not present, you will be found guilty anyway .. Unless you pay 'this' extra .. but that is always that we have 2 to 300 € have to pay extra on the spot. We are no longer afraid of that, it is true in every country, at every rental company ..

Our Mitsubishi Montero had 83 tkm on the clock, but was in a condition that I first estimated it to be 200 tkm. He was completely bungled and scratched, inside some trim parts had fallen off. Maybe that was not so bad for a tour in Costa Rica, you will not notice ... The staff was as uninterested and rude as in all branches of international car rental companies. At Car del Mar we obviously made a bargain, so the value for money was not that bad.

Dollar car hire in San Jose is a few minutes from the airport. Transfers went off quickly. Handover went fast. Unfortunately, it is also trying to sell their own insurance with vigor. I got a car in the next higher class.

This opinion is valid for SIXT, but especially for AUTOESCAPE, so the services have greatly disappointed us: we will not leave with Autoescape anymore! It turns out that the French debit card (the French CB are not credit cards) is a problem to take over a vehicle in Costa Rica, as a priori often in America ... The problem is that this point is not sufficiently highlighted at the time of booking. We can therefore take care of the vehicle with a debit card, only if we take the total risk insurance offered by the renter! Except ALL French are therefore obliged to take it, because no one has ever CREDIT card. This would not be problematic, if this point was emphasized enough, and therefore Autoescape did not offer insurance on its site for the Costa Rican renter! Indeed, we have paid twice for insurance: once at Autoescape, which allows itself to offer it anyway, although they know full well that it will be useless once on site, and a second time at Sixt, just to take the reserved vehicle. We paid more than 300 euros extra on the spot! The owner on site was very patient, and tried to help us, but lost time: Autoescape is unreachable out of office hours, which is a shame! If we have a problem abroad, with jet lag, we can never join them ?! So they are NOT used by anything abroad: to flee for a trip outside Europe! Regarding SIXT itself: no communication at the airport, we had to ask people, with the language barrier we struggled to find the shuttle to go to the landlord, it was not terrible ... Then wait on the spot, because everyone arrives by the shuttle at the same time, so if you go down last, well you wait ... For the return, not terrible either: we must go to the counter again, no specific service to make the vehicle, so you must be lucky and not arrive at the same time as the shuttle! After the rented vehicle was very good, they nosu gave the range above, a 4x4 comfort that climbs very well the odds! And in the end, considering the state of the roads, taking all risks insurance seems an excellent idea! ...

Costa Rica law requires a special Liability insurance that can’t be refused. This insurance was more expensive at Payless than other car rentals and out it made our $20 per day rental over $60. When comparing rental car companies be sure you know the out the door price.

The website said total bill would be one amount but when we got there, we found there was an additional $250 worth of liability insurance absolutely required. That should have been revealed in the total cost of the car rent.

The trip started out rough with Costa Rica guidelines being insurance scams galore. I was able to overcome that fiasco and then started my adventure. Within 30 minutes on the expressway I realized my vehicle needed service. The steering wheel wobbled terribly on the highway. I got to the beach and didn't need the vehicle much so it did not matter. Once I drove to Santa Theresa I realized the jeep was going to break. I called up Payless and they brought a new version of the same vehicle. It worked great from that point forward.

I called Enterprise at 5pm the day my rental was due -- to ask if I could return the car to a different location (from the airport location I picked the car up from). The representative told me it was no problem and I could return to the location close to me (Laredo) by 6pm, when the office would close. I left immediately, and drove through heavy rush hour traffic and detours safely. I arrived at the Laredo location at 5:35pm with a full tank of gas. However, the door to the office was locked and there was nobody there. It appeared they had closed the office early. After another very long phone call with customer service, they finally told me somoene was back at the office to check the car in. I was not able to complete the return until 6:30pm, making me late to get back to my family in Escazu on time. The experience was very frustrating and hectic.

I originally booked a rental 4x4 in late November to pick up in San Jose, Costa Rica. When we arrived we were told that no other 4x4 rentals were available even though another family showed up after us, was helped after us and received a 4x4. Enterprise originally offered nothing except to refund some of the costs. After over an hour of waiting and talking Enterprise gave us a sedan with full protection and then said we could trade it in for a 4x4 in Tamarindo, CR. We talked to the manager and he gave us his business card to call when we got to Tamarindo. When we finally got to Tamarindo we tried to call and no one answered. We went to a Alamo rental and they called and no one answered. We lost valuable time on our trip and the roads that we had to drive on were not meant for a sedan which at times was dangerous. This was the worst experience I have ever had using a rental car service. I will not be using enterprise again.
