I flew from WA to NY suddenly due to a family emergency. That situation required I get a cross-country last minute rental to drive my brother back to WA. The ladies at the desk on 10/3 (around 10am) were kind, sympathetic and very accommodating.
I received a Nissan Rouge which was in decent condition. The seats both front and back were stained heavily which is probably why they didn’t mind it going to WA (lol). The gas mileage was good and everything else in the car was clean. The seats were just not what I expect from Hertz. I’d never received a car in that condition unless it was booked by insurance.
I gotta great deal from carrentals.com and saved $1000 on the cross-country charge. Overall a good experience. Shampoo your seats.

First we had to wait more than 30 minutes because nobody was on the desk. We called the telephone number and the lady told she has to fix a tyre!? Can Hertz Not afford a car repair service? Then she came to desk without apologize giving us the keys for the car. Staff was very unfriendly... really sorry about that!
