For the second time within a rather short period I had a very disturbing experience with the car rental company Car del Mar does business with. This time it concerned Car racing in Faro. The price was rather nice and the reviews I read were positive. There was a shuttle bus waiting for me and the procedure was quick. So far so good. Arriving at my first accommodation (Olhão) I noticed a warning light, indicating there was something wrong with the pressure of the tires. Fortunately it was just that and I could have it fixed next morning. The third day of my rental period I had planned a long, rather scenic route from Olhão to Portagem near Marvão (391 km; 6 hrs and 13 min.). Around 4 p.m., near a city called Redondo (east or Évora) a message (in Portuguese) appeared with the word “oleo” in it. That worried me a lot. I kept a close eye on the temperature of the engine and a proper translation at a gasoline station. "Car is in need of an oil change". I didn't dare to ignore this warning and continue my trip. As Authorized only has offices in Faro and Portimão, I decided to find a local garage to have the necessary oil change performed. It took about an hour and this meant I had to drive the last part of my trip partly in the dark, depriving me or enjoying the scenery. After completing my round trip, ending in Portimão, I got used to their office there and was very confident I would have reimbursed the costs I had made (€ .114,65). To my astonishment I WAS NOT. According to Author the clean procedure would have been: Call Author. Wait for someone to pick me and the car up. Receive a new car at Faro It may be the proper procedure for Authoring (due to the deals they probably have with car ambulances etc.) but is completely unacceptable for the client. Even if there would have been a car ambulance at Redondo (very unlikely) it would have tasks close to 3 hours to reach Faro. Leaving a car ambulance from Faro would have meant double that time (at least). From Faro to my reserved hotel in Portagem via the quickest way (including toll roads) would have tasks another 3 hours and 45 minutes according to Google Maps. Like I stated: Totally unacceptable. Clean procedure as far as taking care of the car by seeing to that oil change has been performed ON TIME, was waved away as 'irrelevant'. Autorent was NOT to blame. I should have called. Addition: According to the employee I spoke to when I brought the car back, both warning lights were just minor sensor defaults. I could easily have continued driving another 500 or even 1,000 kilometers. My suggestion to inform the client (me) that such things might happen was ignored…. Needles to state I'll NEVER make use of Autorent again. Based on my experience with Car del Mar I don't think you can agree with this type of handling clients. It jeopardizes your interests as well, I think. People might start wondering if Car del Mar is selecting the right partners.
