I still think putting down $900 for a rental car is some sort of SCAM but it's quite common in EU and so I didn't hesitate. I had just rented another car a few weeks prior to this one with Mega Car and all went well so I booked a car through Europcar on line through cheaptickets.com.
I picked up the car from Schwechat Airport and noone walked me out to the car or did the mendatory walk around. When I mentioned this to the agent, he said: It's ok , the bruises /damages were already marked on the paper I had signed, so I shouldn't worry about it.?
So basically he made me sign the paper before I even saw the car.
For 10 minutes he also tried to talk me into some extra car insurance that would have come out to $24/day although I had already bought some( $10/day) on line through the site I booked. I had the car for 3 days.
The car was parked in an assigned spot outdoors. It was a looong way from where the booth was and since it was winter and I had a big suite case very inconvenient to get there. The Fiat we rented ran fine, there was no issues at all and we returned it in the same condition we picked it up in. At the return it was freezing and we were waiting in line for the the hand over and inspection.
Since there was only one person and a line of people the guy from Europcar in charge, poor guy frozen to the bone, just took one look at my car and took my keys. He asked: Was everything ok with the car? I replied: Yes, all was great. It's full and all was well.
I pointed to our Fiat and he just took the keys and said: No need to wait. Go ahead. It's freezing.Have a good journey.
So we left. A day later I got an email by the damage department of Europcar claiming some bogus damages on the tires and inside the car???
I was outraged and wrote them back immediately. I am still waiting to hear back but there was no damages from us and they are holding my 900$.

Eurocar at VIENNA Airport is the typical rental car scam we hear too much about. Streamlined booking, easy pickup, pristine car. Upon return, agent purports to find an inch scratch. Truly indiscernable and more than likely there at pickup. Suddenly a bill appears for 1900 euros. This is an outrage.
