The quote given to me by carrentals.com was about $120 for just over two weeks. It was not made clear that I required liability insurance in Panama, so I chose to not take it. When attempting to pick up the vehicle in David, Panama, the Thrifty agents, in very poor English, insisted that Panamanian law required that I purchase liability insurance from them. That brought the price to about $900, which is an outrageous fee for only $10,000 coverage. At this point I declined the rental. If the insurance is mandatory, quotes should be given including that fee.

I reserved a car for the declared TOTAL price, including tax, of $52.17 for three days. Yet, the Thrifty agent insisted on mandatory insurance that more than TRIPPLED the price. This is an unethical business practice, and I will avoid using this service in future.

Terrible experience. Renters are led to believe that the rental rate is very low in Panama. Should have known better (perhaps) as it turned out to be too good to be true. To get the car, you will be charged ~3x the rental cost in mandatory insurance for Panama. This was after declining all because we are covered by our insurance at home and credit card. Didn't matter. Agent would not rent to us unless we agreed to pay for the local insurance. I don't think that the insurance offered on carrrentals.com would have satisfied the Thrifty fine print we were presented with at their office -- it would have been considered third party insurance (not accepted in Panama).
