In Calgary: charged x dollars for late delay while we returned the car 4 hours before. In addition we had to bring the car to Macleod Street while we were staying near the airport (flight the next morning). At Hertz Calgary Macleod they told us we could have returned the car to the airport.

I've had a good experience, generally, with Hertz, but was sorely irritated with them this time. I returned the car two days earlier than the full week—because I didn't need it anymore—and they insisted on charging me extra for breaking the contract. I have been renting from Hertz at least six or seven times a year for the last several years. I'll not rent from them anymore.

1. the price. Online I was quoted a different price, cheaper, which is why I chose to go with that rental. I was surprised by the amount I was charged at the pick-up counter. 2. insurance. the customer should not EVER be charged for roadside assistance (unless they do something like lock the keys in the car, ie, in a case the need for service is clearly on them). But otherwise, having to pay upwards of $40 A DAY for insurance is ridiculous. My credit card covers some but not all of the possible nightmares protections. these companies make so much money off our backs, for the tiny chance of bad luck. why is insurance not grouped into one that covers all and doesn't break the wallet. i always get a gut feeling I am being over-charged by double-dipping practices - why is insurance not more transparent. 3. the car. this is the 3rd time i have rented from this company that the calibration was off. the car kept swerving to the left. come on. you ask us to pay for every possible issue that might come up - but your cars have been faulty. last time i got a car there, it smelled like someone had just smoked 4 million cigarettes - they tried to tell me everything was cool. i had to negotiate for 1/2 hour to get a different (clean, inoffensive) car. 4. they claimed the car was in perfect condition - but when we received the car we immediately saw a tiny dent on the driver's door. The staff have always been kind for the most part. The issues above are just another manifestation of the stupidity of doing everything for a profit, even if it means sacrificing quality and what feels like extremely opaque practices. For this trip, the best person I dealt with was the man who received the car upon drop-off. Extremely efficient and also friendly/good energy.
