I didn't take the car in the end as they forced me to pay an extra 90 pounds in taxes and then I could not return the car a little earlier as they where closed. that would have cost me another 45 pound

We had rented a luxury vehicle for 2 days out of London. On arrival to collect the vehicle we were told that we had been upgraded to a better vehicle. Wonderful we thought. We then went through the documentation process to be told that the insurance we had prepurchased through carrentals.com was not valid for the UK meaning we had to pay an additional amount to obtain vehicle insurance. Once that was completed we got the vehicle, programmed our destination and left only to find that the GPS was faulty. Without any other maps, we then had to negotiate London traffic and one way streets to get back to the rental agency to try and sort the issue. After pressing buttons on the dash for 30 minutes (a process which we tried before trying to drive back to the agents) they gave us a standalone GPS with no instructions, set to Spanish language and the country Portugal. Another 20 minutes gone while we sorted that out. End result, the rental cost us an extra 70 GBP and and 1.5 hours longer than expected. All told a very unexpected experience which, as an experienced traveller, I have never encountered before.
