My experience picking up the car was excellent however returning the car was not, I wanted to pay cash for the car rather than leaving the expense on my credit card, the clerk just took my paperwork, ask if I was returning the car, she ask me to wait , when she returned she processed the paperwork and ask me to sign, I think she should have asked if I wanted to pay or leave on the card, otherwise ok

It all went well - a little trouble finding Avis - Google maps displayed a wrong location, but once found. The agent's micro search of the car for dings and scrapes was pretty annoying. The car was in very good condition and it all worked well.

I took out separate insurance online, they wouldn't accept this in Jamaica, they wanted to charge an additional $260 which was more than the hire of the car, eventually we managed to use the free insurance on my credit card, no before waiting an hour whilst they called the credit card company and asked for proof to be emailed. This is all geared so you use their insurance which was 4 times the price of the insurance bought online.

3 traffic tips to keep you safe

  • You’ll have to drive on the left in Jamaica, so stay alert to that fact if you’re not used to it.
  • Locals tend to drive in an unashamedly bold way, and as a newcomer it’s best to drive defensively and keep an eye out for overtaking traffic.
  • Make liberal use of your car horn, especially when planning to overtake or going around tight bends.
