I rented a Chevy Malibu (good car) for a month. When I picked up the car, I specifically asked if I could return the car early and I was told Yes and that if I did that, I would possibly get a rebate. So i returned the car a week early only to be told that this changed the rental charge and I was charged an additional $175. It took me 4 lengthy phone calls before I reached Brandon, a supervisor in CA, (first 2 calls went to Mexico and those service agents insisted that what I was being charged was a MN state tax - so while they were pleasant, they knew nothing and I had to insist on talking to Americans who understood this was not a tax) who was willing to stand by what the agent told me and agreed to refund me my $175. (I accepted the full monthly rental cost because that is what I signed the contract for.) Now, i understand why Budget has this policy - because monthly rates are lower, anyone would rent for the month and return the car early but Budget needs to make sure that the renter knows there is a big financial penalty for returning the car early.
