I had a very pleasant week driving a Toyota Corolla. It performed great in the winter weather I experienced in OK, NM, TX & AZ. Picking up and returning the vehicle was fast and easy.

I reserved my rental at an “airport loacation” which turned out to be NOT at the airport but a 20 minute drive away. When I called the place I was picking up my car From I asked to drop it off at the actual airport and the woman on the phone said that would fine. Then when I picked up the car the guy upgraded us because our class of car was not available but was going to charge us until I challenged him. He said he wouldn’t but shouldn’t because we were late? Not sure why they just wouldn’t charge me for my original pick up time. Finally I told him I wanted to drop it off at the actual airport location and he said it would be extra. When I asked him how much he didn’t know and then had to go ask someone else. Finally it’s been 24 hours since I dropped off the car and I still have not received my receipt they promised in the mail.

The pickup was extremely smooth. The car was ready when I arrived. I was in and out in less than 10 minutes. I also received an upgrade which made the rental even more enjoyable.

I thought I was a booking a car for pickup at the Oklahoma City airport but when I went to the desk to pick up, I found that my booking was in another location. I suspect that the web site was misleading or perhaps I was just not paying attention. On the positive side, the person at the counter was very helpful in getting me a car for pick up and return to the airport.

I reserved a Ford Edge "or similar". When picking up at the counter, the rep tried to upsell me to an SUV which I found odd because a Ford Edge is what I would consider a small SUV but I brushed it off thinking maybe he was trying to offer me something bigger like a Suburban. When he pulled the car around, it turned out to be a Subaru Crosstrek. Because I don't know the nuances of what is considered within the "or similar" in the reservation, I went ahead and accepted the Subaru. I enjoyed driving the Subaru, however, for the price I paid, this was not the vehicle I intended to drive. I rented for a roadtrip with the adults and enough luggage for a week. Cargo space in a Ford Edge is 34 cubic feet and cargo space in a Subaru Crosstrek is 18 cubic feet. That is in no way "similar". We made it work but it was a tight squeeze. This is the second time I've rented through CarRentals.com and both times I have gotten a different car than specified in the reservation. Maybe something gets lost in translation between the website and the actual vendor or maybe it's the rental agency's m.o. to try to rent lower end vehicles first. The latter seems a little far fetched. Bottom line, the vehicle I received was fantastic, however, for the size, the price per day should have been less. And it wasn't the vehicle I intended to rent.

I needed a car to use on a road trip I was making from Oklahoma City to Minneapolis. I chose to not rent from the airport, as I work across the street from an Avis/Budget location, and I could park my car in my works parking lot. I first reserved my vehicle through Avis for a noon pick up. I called a few days before to see if I could pick it up about 3 hours earlier, as sometime had come up and I needed to leave earlier. When I spoke with someone there, they said to call the day before to see if a car would be available at that time. So I did. Not only was I told that they didn't know if a car would be available at 9am, they couldn't guarantee a car would be available at noon, or if at all that day, because the ONE economy car they had wasn't due to come in until "about noon or so", and there was no guarantee when the previous renter would be returning it. However, they could upgrade me to a different vehicle at a discounted price, I would just have to pay the difference in the rental prices. This was totally unacceptable. Why should I have to pay additional monies because they can't have the vehicle that I rented there when it should be there? So I checked with Budget. I was able to get a rental for 7:30 in the morning for about $30 more. I wasn't too happy about paying the extra money for the same car (literally, the same car as they share the one car between Avis and Budget), but I thought if it could guarantee the car would be there at 7:30, it was worth it. So I canceled my Avis reservation and booked with Budget. I then called to verify my car would be available at 7:30am. This is when it hit me that there is only one car. The man who answered the phone said he couldn't guarantee it would be there at 7:30, that he couldn't even guarantee it would be there that day if the person didn't return it on time. I admit, I was quite rude to the guy, and I apologized the next day. I realize it's not his fault. I was extremely frustrated that I needed to get to my destination at a certain time, and when I was told basically it didn't matter when I made my reservation for, when they got a car in is when I would get it. Could be 6pm that night, could be at noon. Might be the next day. I didn't care what car I had, but again, why should I have to pay extra because they couldn't come through on their end of the agreement? When I called at 8am the next day, they did have a car ready for me. So in the end I got my car and was able to make it to my destination within the time I needed to. But for 2 days I was worrying I wouldn't be able to make it in time, and I was frustrated and angry with Budget, AND Avis, with their laxidasical attitude towards my needs after I had entered into an agreement. Seems to me they only have the one car, and their go to answer is they can upgrade the customer for an additional fee. It's a racket to make extra money. They very well could have the car I rented and just say they didn't and charge me more for an upgrade. Sounds like it has the potential to be shady. One would think they would be able to obtain a vehicle from another local Budget (or Avis) location if they didn't have one on the lot and a customer was coming in at a certain time to pick it up. Next time I will be better off paying the exhorbitant amount the airport charges and getting it there in exchange for the peace of mind knowing they are going to have my car that I rented available when I need it.
