Your Guide to Wilmington, NC

No trip through North Carolina is complete without a stop in Wilmington. “Wilmywood” has something for everyone, whether you’re looking to enjoy a stroll along the Cape Fear Riverwalk or visit a battleship-turned-war memorial. See all the sights in this lovely port city with a cheap Wilmington, NC car rental.

Driving Through Wilmington

Wilmington is a big city, so hop into your car rental to drive to some of its top attractions. The Cape Fear River Walk is located along the east bank of the Cape Fear River, and encompasses several miles of beautiful riverfront territory. After a brisk walk, stop by the adjacent Riverfront Park, which is full of musicians and food vendors. Across the Cape Fear River is the U.S.S. North Carolina Battleship Memorial Park. The North Carolina saw action during World War II, and is full of exhibits about its service and the United States military.
Continue on in your historical adventures by visiting Bellamy Mansion, just under 4 miles east of the battleship in the heart of downtown Wilmington. The mansion was built between 1859 and 1861 by John Dillard Bellamy to house his growing family. The house is a wonderful example of antebellum architecture, and is now a museum. Walk through its restored rooms, pause to think in its beautiful gardens, and learn more about life in the south. The Bellamy Mansion is part of the Wilmington Historic District, so once you’ve toured the house, you can take a horse-drawn trolley through the district, or wander the downtown area on foot.

Beyond Wilmington

Reserving one of the rental cars in Wilmington, NC means you have the freedom to get to see more than just Wilmington. Twenty-two miles south of the memorial, down along Kure Beach, is the North Carolina Aquarium. The aquarium is the perfect place to educate yourself about sea life off the Atlantic coast, as well as amphibious and land animals such has alligators and snakes. The aquarium is located on the Fort Fisher State Recreation area, so once you finish exploring the deep sea, you’re free to tour what remains of Fort Fisher, a Civil War-era base, as well as a lagoon and beachfront.
If you’re up for more adventure, why not head 75 miles south to Myrtle Beach? Enjoy a round of golf at one of over 100 courses scattered around the area, or just stroll along the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk, keeping an eye out for the perfect souvenir.

History of Wilmington

When the area that became Wilmington was settled in the 1700s, it was originally called “New Carthage.” It changed names several times before being incorporated as “Wilmington” in 1739 or 1740. During the Civil War, Wilmington sided with the Confederacy, acting as a home port to blockade runners that routinely sped supplies past the barrier set up by the Union Navy. Despite its important position in the war, Wilmington escaped major action, and as a result a number of its historic buildings remain intact today. In subsequent decades, Wilmington became a popular place to film television shows and movies, leading to its nickname of Wilmywood.

The Weather

If you’re visiting Wilmington during the summer, you can expect humidity and rain: between 5 and 8 inches in June, July, and August. Average high temperatures tend to reach the 80s and 90s. If you’re visiting during the winter, you can expect average highs in the 50s and 60s, though the temperature can drop to the 30s. Wilmington does not typically see much snow, though it does occasionally fall. Spring and fall have very little rain in comparison to summer, though fall is often quite humid.
