Your Guide to Washington D.C.

The United States capital is a place everyone should visit at least once. The center of the US government is filled with history, education, and entertainment, making Washington, D.C. a perfect vacation choice for anyone wanting to have a fulfilling getaway. Likewise, the city can be inexpensive if the trip is properly planned. A cheap Washington, D.C. car rental through CarRentals.com is just the thing to help get your adventure off on the right foot.

Down in the District

What are you going to do when you rent a car in Washington, D.C.? Most spots in and around the 2-mile “Front Yard” of the White House called the National Mall, which is located in the downtown area, are free to the general public. You can easily spend an entire day at the National Museum of Natural History, the National Museum of American History, and the National Gallery. White House tours are free to the public as well, if you are able to get a spot on the coveted tour list.
Washington, D.C. is much more than the mall area, though an entire trip could easily be spent in this spot. To fully explore the district, start your car rental and head just under 20 miles south to Mt. Vernon, George Washington's homestead. After you’ve toured the first president’s home, head back to D.C. for lunch, then drive 45 miles north to Baltimore. Tour the National Aquarium, or visit the historic ships berthed at the harbor, and finish up your day with a bowl of traditional clam chowder.
While you’re in town, make sure you stop by FedExField®—located 11 miles east of D.C.—and cheer on the Washington Redskins. If you prefer baseball to football, the Washington Nationals play at Nationals Park, and hockey fans will love watching the Washington Capitals play at Verizon® Center.

Creating Columbia

The District of Columbia came into being in 1790, when the victorious American populace opted to create a capital district. This district, which included portions from both Maryland and Virginia, was named after General George Washington, who led the colonial forces in the Revolutionary War. The city grew extensively afterward, particularly with the advent of the streetcar in the 1880s. During the 1930s, an influx of money from the New Deal led to a building spree, including numerous government buildings as well as monuments and galleries, many of which remain prominent destinations for residents and tourists alike.

The Weather in Washington

Summer in Washington, D.C. can feel hot. Temperatures routinely hit the high 70s and low 80s, but they bring with them increased humidity. These conditions often lead to thunderstorms, which can quickly rain on your afternoon parade, so keep an eye on the weather report. Fall, by contrast, is warm and dry, whereas winter is very cold. You can expect around 15 inches of snow in the winter, along with temperatures averaging in the high 30s. Spring, like fall, is pleasant, with warm days interspersed with showers.
