Your Guide to Tucson AZ

Discover the University of Arizona and wonderful weather on your next trip to Tucson. You’ll be able to explore the Old Pueblo at your leisure, from the majestic Santa Catalina Mountains to the Santa Cruz River. Not only will you be able to see all of the area’s top attractions, but you’ll be free from the restraints of public transportation with a cheap Tucson car rental.

Where to Go

You’ll roll through town like tumbleweed with car rentals in Tucson, AZ. The city is fairly spread out (and hot), so you’ll want to drive to most places. Head to the Pima Air & Space Museum in the downtown area, and marvel at over 300 types of aircraft before making your way to the Tucson Botanical Garden about 10 miles north. Check out the lush landscape within the grounds to view which type of plant life does best in the Arizona sun. Of course, you’ll want to complete your trip by cheering on the Arizona Wildcats on their home turf before embarking on a quest to find the best Mexican food in town.

Beyond the City Limits

Don’t just limit yourself to exploring Tucson. Crank up the air conditioner in your car rental and start driving. Make your first stop just 13 miles east of downtown at Saguaro National Park, where you can hike and check out some of the state’s biggest cacti. Once you’ve had your prickly fun, head north, as just over 100 miles away is the city is Phoenix, the state capital and an intriguing destination in its own right. Stop by the Heard Museum, or enjoy a blast from the past at the Pioneer Living History Village.
Alternatively, you can see more of the state by reserving a car rental in a different city. Rent a car in Mesa and shop ’til you drop at the Superstition Springs Center. Once you’ve stuffed your car rental with your purchases, you can head for Tucson—it’s just 117 miles south through some of the most striking desert landscape in the world.

Tucson Tales

Tucson has been the site of numerous settlements and has been squabbled over by various nations, but the city as we know it was founded in 1775. The Presidio San Agustin del Tucson, a large military fort, was built to hold off attacks by the Apache Indians, and Tucson joined Mexico after it broke with Spain in 1821. After a stint with the Confederate forces during the Civil War, Tucson became synonymous with the Wild West, as the surrounding territories of Arizona and New Mexico were plagued by bandits and highway robbery.

Desert Heat

While Tucson is considered a desert city, it does get about 11 inches of rain per year, usually during the monsoon season. This period strikes during late summer; the humidity spikes, thunderstorms roar, and flooding can occur. Summer itself tends to be hot and dry, with temperatures regularly reaching three digits. Winter sees temperatures in the high 60s and 70s. Those with allergies should avoid Tucson in the spring, as masses of wildflowers start blooming right around this time.
