CarRentals.com Booking Terms and Conditions

Revision date: December 12, 2018

CarRentals.com is acting solely as an intermediary facilitating the booking of rental car services (“Rental Services”) provided by car rental agencies (collectively, “Car Suppliers”), made available to you on the website, www.carrentals.com (the “Site”). Our contractual obligation is limited to the mediation of the offered and bookable Rental Services provided to customers (“You” or “Customers”). The execution of Rental Services is not part of our contractual obligations. CarRentals itself does not provide its own car rental services.

The contract of carriage in use by a Car Supplier, when issued, shall be between the Car Supplier and the Customer. The provision of the Rental Services by the Car Supplier is governed by the specific terms and conditions of the Car Suppliers (the “Rental Terms and Conditions”).

CAR RENTAL RESTRICTIONS

Car rental bookings and reservations available through this Site are subject to the Rental Terms and Conditions of the applicable Car Supplier. CarRentals.com offers three kinds of rates: (1) Pay at Pickup rates, (2) non-cancellable prepaid rates and (3) cancellable prepaid rates. These rates can be identified by the payment information and cancellation policy on the booking page. The following restrictions apply:

Cancellation:

Pay at Pickup Bookings: For “Pay at Pickup Bookings,” CarRentals.com displays estimated charges based on the Car Supplier’s published rates, taxes and fees, which may not include mandatory tax and insurance charges required for certain international rentals. A Pay at Pickup Booking will not result in a charge on the Customer’s account. Actual rental charges are charged by the Car Supplier upon the Customer’s return of the car. Pay Later reservations may be cancelled at any time without penalty.

Non-Cancellable Prepaid Bookings: These bookings are identified as “Prepay Special Bookings” and cannot be cancelled, refunded, exchanged or transferred to other individuals. Once you complete a booking, your credit card will be immediately charged by the Car Supplier for the amount shown during the booking process. Prepay Special Bookings do not include charges for any extras, which will be charged by the Car Supplier at pickup.

Cancellable Prepaid Bookings: These bookings are identified as “Cancellable Prepaid Bookings” and may be cancelled up to 48 hours before pickup. Cancellations made within 48 hours of pickup time will require a charge of 55 USD. If your booking amount is less than 55 USD you will not receive a refund. If you cancel the car within 48 hours of pickup or do not show up, you will not be entitled to any refund. If you show up late to pick up the car or return the car early, you also are not entitled to any refund for the unused portion of the original rental period.

Other restrictions:

  1. The amount you are charged by CarRentals.com for Cancellable Prepaid Bookings do not include mandatory tax and insurance charges required, which you will pay directly to the rental car company. These taxes and fees have been estimated at time of booking.
  2.  Reservations made through CarRentals.com are not eligible for express service, car rental loyalty programs or frequent flyer miles.
  3. Drivers under 25 years of age may be required to pay additional fees upon pickup of the vehicle. .
  4. All drivers must present a valid driver's license and a credit card in their name when picking up the car. The amount of credit necessary varies, depending on the car type and the rental period. Prepaid credit cards are NOT acceptable.
  5. Neither CarRentals.com nor the Car Supplier will accept coupons for upgrades, free days, discounts or any other promotions.
  6. Optional items - such as optional equipment, or the addition of drivers or days to your rental - must be requested and paid for direct to the Car Supplier at the rental counter. Such optional items are not included in CarRentals.com’s quoted rate and will be charged by the Car Supplier as an additional expense.

PAYMENT

All prices and amounts shown on this Site are in U.S. Dollars (USD), unless otherwise noted. For any amounts due at pickup, tax rates and foreign exchange rates are subject to change.
For certain Car Suppliers, you may be presented with the option to pay online now or pay later at the counter when picking up the car. If you select the “Cancellable Prepaid” option, CarRentals.com will charge the amount of the base rate to your credit card in US dollars immediately, excluding taxes, fees, and extras (if requested). Taxes, fees and extras for Cancellable Prepaid Bookings will be charged in local currency directly by the Car Supplier at pickup.
If you select a Non-Cancellable Prepaid option, the Car Supplier will charge your credit card in the local currency immediately.
If you select “Pay Later”, the Car Supplier will charge your credit card for the full amount of the booking in the local currency at the time when you pick up the car.

BANK AND CREDIT CARD FEES

Your payment is processed in the United States by Citizens Bank, NA (1 Citizens Plaza, Providence, Rhode Island 02903 USA), when CarRentals.com collects your payment. When the Car Supplier processes your payment, it will be processed in the country in which the Car Supplier is based.
CarRentals.com, Citizens Bank or the Car Supplier may have to verify: (i) the validity of the payment card (through a charge of a nominal value that is either refunded within a few days or deducted from the final payment due to the travel supplier) and, (ii) the availability of funds on the payment card (to be confirmed by the bank issuing the your credit card).
Some banks and credit card companies impose fees for international or cross border transactions. For instance, if you are making a booking using a US-issued card with a non-US merchant, your bank may charge you a cross border or international transaction fee. Furthermore, booking international travel may be considered an international transaction by your bank or card company, since we may pass your card details to an international travel supplier to be charged. In addition, some banks and card companies impose fees for currency conversion. For instance, if you are making a booking in a currency other than the currency of your credit card, your credit card company may convert the booking amount to the currency of your credit card and charge you a conversion fee. The currency exchange rate and foreign transaction fee is determined solely by your bank on the day that they process the transaction. If you have any questions about these fees or the exchange rate applied to your booking, please contact your bank.
