Your Guide to St. Thomas, United States Virgin Islands

When you’re looking for a relaxing vacation, there’s nothing quite like a trip to the tropics. Enjoy sparkling turquoise waters, a warm Caribbean breeze, and more diving and snorkeling opportunities than you’ll know what to do with on your next trip to St. Thomas. But you won’t be able to see all the gorgeous beaches of this small island with just public transportation. Book a cheap St. Thomas car rental and make your tropical getaway everything it ought to be.

Steer Through St. Thomas

The capital city of Charlotte Amalie is close to Cyril E. King Airport (STT) and is easy to explore with a car rental in St. Thomas. Visit Blackbeard’s Castle, an old watchtower that stands over the harbor. While it was built by the Danish in 1679, legend has it Blackbeard the pirate took it over during the 18th century.
Less than a mile south of Blackbeard’s Castle is Fort Christian, Charlotte Amalie’s former center of administration and a onetime prison. Walk around the outside of the imposing building, then head a few blocks north to Charlotte Amalie’s 99 Steps. This staircase runs between two historic buildings, and was built in the 1700s from bricks brought over as ballast in the holds of transport ships. Today, these steps are flanked by fragrant, colorful flowers and plants, and are a popular way to reach other parts of the city.

Beaches of St. Thomas

When you book one of the St. Thomas rental cars, you can see some of the remarkable natural beauty that has made the island so famous. Head 2.5 miles north to Magens Bay Beach, where you’ll find shimmering white sand, a quiet waterfront, and even an arboretum for you to wander through.
Just over 1.5 miles west of Charlotte Amalie is Crown Bay. This gorgeous inlet is where the big cruise ships dock to let off their passengers, and as a result Crown Bay is full of shops and restaurants. Comb over the open market and several charming boutiques for the perfect souvenir, or sample Caribbean cuisine at one of the cafes or open-air restaurants lining the shore.

History of St. Thomas

The island’s first European settlers came with the Dutch West India Company, who built a trading post in 1657. Its excellent harbor made it a prime spot for big merchant vessels, which took on the cargoes of sugar that initially made St. Thomas a wealthy island. In the early 20th century, the United States purchased St. Thomas, ostensibly to defend the Caribbean area as The Great War raged. St. Thomas also served as a defensive outpost during World War II, but after hostilities ceased and global travel became more affordable, tourism became its primary industry.

Weather in St. Thomas

The climate of St. Thomas is warm and beautiful year-round. No matter what time of year you visit, you can expect temperatures in the mid to high 80s. August and September may see highs in the 90s, but the rest of the year sees very little variation in temperature; even in the evenings, you’re likely to see warmth in the low to mid-70s. The island’s wet season runs from September through November or December, and this is when St. Thomas receives most of its nearly 40 inches of annual rain.
