Any visit to the City by the Bay is bound to be a special one. While Northern California is known for its excellent public transportation system, you still aren’t likely to see all the areas you’d like without your own vehicle. Corner the market on sightseeing with a cheap SFO car rental and see San Francisco on your own time.…
Arrival at SFO
Once you land at San Francisco International Airport (SFO), exit your terminal and hop aboard the AirTrain Blue Line. This automated line runs 24 hours a day, and will bring you to the Rental Car Center on McDonnell Road. While many car rental agencies are located here, additional companies may be further away, and may require for you to arrange a shuttle or taxi to reach.
The City by the Bay
No trip to San Francisco is complete without a visit to Fisherman’s Wharf, located about 17 miles north of SFO via the 101. This bustling neighborhood is home to Pier 39 and numerous other attractions, and it’s the perfect place for a bowl of San Franciscan clam chowder or to explore an art gallery. Next, drive your car rental 4 miles west to Golden Gate Park, and where you can hike, bike, and picnic by a lake, all while breathing in the cool air of the Northern Pacific.
An SFO rental car doesn’t limit you to just San Francisco. Explore the Bay Area; head about 60 miles north on I-80 and CA-29 N to visit Napa Valley, where you can responsibly enjoy a wine tasting or do some shopping in its high-end boutiques. You may also wish to head 50 miles south on I-280 to San Jose, where you can visit the Winchester Mystery House and learn about its eccentric former occupant, Sarah Winchester.
When you’re ready to head home, return your vehicle to the Rental Center and ride the shuttle to one of its four terminals. SFO initially opened in 1927 over the remains of a cow pasture, and went through several name changes before settling on San Francisco International in 1955. Today the airport hosts domestic and international airlines like Virgin America and Aeromexico, among others.
While You Wait
A quick cup of coffee, fine dining, and ultimate relaxation are all at your fingertips at SFO. The Aviation Museum & Library is an adapted reconstruction of the airport’s 1930s lobby, and is full of exhibits and books for aviation aficionados to explore. Study the artwork on display throughout the terminals, or even enjoy a peaceful yoga session to help you relax before boarding.
