The History of Rockford

Rockford was originally called Midway, as it was located in between the communities of Kentville and Haightville. Renamed Rockford thanks to the nearby ford on the Rock River, the city was officially incorporated in 1852. The area attracted settlers throughout the second half of the 19th century with its agriculture and furniture manufacturing, and the city eventually became the second-leading furniture producer in the nation. Rockford was also home to the Zouave regiment, one of the first groups of soldiers from Illinois to be mobilized during the Civil War.

The Weather

You’ll experience four separate seasons depending on when you visit Rockford. Summer sees average highs in the 80s, along with an average of 3 to 4 inches of rain through June, July, and August. Spring and early summer can also bring frequent showers and thunderstorms. September and October see average highs in the 60s and 70s, before the temperature drops sharply into the 40s in November. Winter tends to be cold and snowy, with average highs in the 20s and 30s, as well as 36 inches of annual snowfall. Winter storms and blizzards can be harsh, and frequently shut down the city when they occur.
