Your Guide to Portland, OR

Portland, Oregon gets major points for being both innovative and artistic. With a style all its own, the music scene in Portland continues to thrive thanks to a large number of performance venues and karaoke bars. Additionally, this Northwestern city has developed a reputation for being a little…different, and its citizens embrace its quirks with the mantra “Keep Portland weird.” Check out the weirdness for yourself in a cheap Portland car rental.

Downtown Portland

You can make a good dent in your “Places to See” list just by driving your car rental to the Portland downtown area, where you can see some of Portland’s finest draws within a small radius. Visit the Portland Art Museum and the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art to see art that ranges from prehistoric to ultramodern. Peruse shelves lined with the classics at Powell's City of Books, the largest independent bookstore in the world.

Explore Surrounding Portland

Oregon is widely considered one of the most beautiful states in the Union, so hop into your car rental to see as much of it as you can. Are you a fan of kayaking? Drive to the shores of the Willamette River just 15 miles northwest. This waterway is known for its beauty, and is the perfect place to go kayaking or just enjoy a picnic.
Beyond the Willamette, no trip to Portland is complete without an exploration of Oregon’s many vistas. From the Willamette River, you can drive across the gorgeous St. Johns Bridge, a suspension bridge with gothic-inspired towers just begging for a photo op.
Fifty miles south of Portland is the capital city of Salem where you can tour its historic downtown area and join in on some of its many festivals. Continue your exploration of the state’s natural beauty with a trip to Mt. Hood. Located some 90 miles east of Portland, Mt. Hood is home to both the stunning Mt. Hood National Forest and, during the winter, the Mt. Hood Meadows Ski Resort.
If you’re ready to see the Oregon coastline you’ve been hearing so much about, the famed Rockaway Beach is about 100 miles west of Portland. You’ll pass through the beautiful Tillamook State Forest en route—yes, it’s related to the cheese—completing your Oregon sightseeing in one fell swoop.

The Beauty of Portland: Then and Now

Like many cities before it, Portland started out with just a sawmill and a newspaper. By the 1850s, it sported its own cemetery and a general store, and by the 1860s it had enough of a population that usage of public spaces and utilities were becoming a concern. Portland’s enviable geographic position—it has access to the Pacific Ocean and the Tualatin Valley’s outstanding agriculture—meant it attracted people from all walks of life. Loggers, miners, and their families migrated to the city, which necessitated doctors, teachers, and other professions to tend to those families. As it grew, Portland began swallowing up its smaller surrounding towns and territories, and today it is home to over 600,000 inhabitants.

What Weather to Expect in the Pacific Northwest

If you’re visiting Portland in the summer, you can expect average temperatures in the 70s to 80s. July and August do produce the occasional heat waves, but you probably won’t have to deal with anything higher than 90 degrees. Now, if you head to Portland during the winter, bring your umbrella and a raincoat, as that’s when the city receives most of its 36 inches of annual rain. Hoping for snow? You may be out of luck. While the Greater Portland Area does get some snowfall, it’s not a guarantee, and the downtown area rarely gets any at all.
