Your Guide to Pittsburgh, PA

Pittsburgh, PA isn’t just home to the Pittsburgh Penguins; it is also home to over 400 bridges. Not surprisingly, the city has been referred to as “The City of Bridges” for quite some time. You can explore Pittsburgh—and cross as many bridges as you can—when you book a cheap Pittsburgh car rental here at CarRentals.com today.

Places to Go, Things to See

Once you rent a car in Pittsburgh, cruise up to the top of Mt. Washington for a view of downtown. Once you’ve snapped some great pictures, make your way down to the famous Campbell’s Soup Can exhibits at the Andy Warhol Museum. Continue your bridge-crossing here, too; the Andy Warhol Bridge traverses the Allegheny River, and on the other side you can relax at Point State Park. Make your way 4 miles east to take a stroll through the orchid displays at the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, then pass the afternoon away browsing the dinosaurs at the nearby Carnegie Museum of Art and Natural History. Thanks to your car rental, you can zoom around to every attraction during your stay in “The ’Burgh.”
You may have heard the term “City of Champions” in reference to Pittsburgh. Back in the 1970s, the three major Pittsburgh teams won a number of championships, and the nickname has stuck. Fans of baseball, football, and hockey will have their hands full, as all three teams have arenas in the downtown area. During the summer, watch the Pittsburgh Pirates play at PNC Park®. If you’re visiting in fall and winter, you can root for the Pittsburgh Penguins at CONSOL Energy® Center, or the Pittsburgh Steelers at Heinz Field™.
If you’re ready for some real adventure, head beyond the city limits. Seventy-five miles south of Pittsburgh is Morgantown, WV, and its Main Street is the perfect place for budding foodies and entertainment lovers alike. Alternatively, the city of Akron, OH is just 110 miles northeast. Tour the famed Akron Art Museum, or drive further north to Cuyahoga Falls to check out its beautiful natural scenery.

Origins of Pittsburgh

The area that became Pittsburgh was inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Shawnee, before European settlers set up shop in the late 1700s. The War of 1812 bolstered American industry by cutting off British importing; in response, Pittsburgh took on manufacturing of iron, glass, and other necessary goods. The Civil War further pushed up Pittsburgh’s fortunes, as it manufactured necessary products for the army. The city’s steel mills continued to churn out metal, but at a high cost to the environment—the air around Pittsburgh was dark and clouded. After World War II, Pittsburgh started taking steps to clean itself up, including turning its economic base toward more environmentally friendly industries.

Cool and Breezy

If you’re visiting Pittsburgh in winter, crank up the heater in your rental car: temperatures average in the mid-30s, and there are at least 112 days at or below freezing. The city also receives some 30 inches of snow and 36 inches of rain per year, most of it during late winter and early spring. Summers in the city are hot and frequently humid; as the thermometer rises, so does the moisture in the air. You can expect averages in the 70s and 80s, so you might want to bring a light jacket.
