Your Guide to Paris, France

Your journey through the City of Lights is bound to be a special one—why limit it to the whims of public transportation? While you can explore the capital city of France on foot or by bike, a cheap car rental in Paris will help you make the most of your stay in La Ville Lumiere, as well as assist you in visiting other parts of France.

Driving Through Paris

There’s much to see and do in Paris, so why not start at the beginning? The Eiffel Tower, a great iron construction that has become synonymous with Paris, is open for tours, and is a must-see. It stands over the Champ de Mars, a beautifully landscaped park where you can stroll, people-watch, and plan out the next step on your Paris adventure.
Just over 2 miles east of Champ de Mars is the Louvre Museum, another Parisian landmark. Some 35,000 items covering the entire history of humanity are on display in this fortress-turned-palace-turned-museum, including Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece, the Mona Lisa.
When you rent a car in Paris, the entire city opens up to you. There’s so much to see and do, such as the Arc de Triomphe in the center of Place Charles de Gaulle, or the beautiful Jardin des Tuileries on the River Seine. But why not head just over a mile south of the Louvre, crossing Pont Notre Dame to Île de la Cité, an island in the middle of the river? There you’ll find Saint-Chapelle, a Gothic chapel first consecrated in 1248. Park your car in the adjacent lot and step inside its doors, and into a world of colorful stained glass and remarkable arched ceilings. The island is also home to the famous Notre-Dame Cathedral.

Outside Paris

Your Paris car rental doesn’t just confine you to the city limits. Twelve miles west of Paris in the Île-de-France region of France is the Palace of Versailles, once the center of court for King Louis XIV and his successors. Walk down the Hall of Mirrors, explore the royal apartments, and take a quiet stroll through the palace’s remarkable gardens.
To see even more of the French countryside, head for Calais, located 180 miles west of Paris. Spend a day or two exploring the Tour du Guet, a 13th-century watchtower, or make your way to the shore. On a clear day, you can see across the strait to the White Cliffs of Dover, England, some 50 miles away.

The History of Paris

Paris is named after the Parisii, a group of Celts who inhabited the area prior to the arrival of the Romans. The fall of the Roman Empire left “Parisius” and its surrounding country to its own devices, and by the 12th century, the city established itself as the capital of France. Despite revolution and strife throughout the decades, Paris remained a beacon of learning, religion, and culture throughout Europe, its status leading in part to its “The City of Light” nickname. The more than 50,000 gas streetlights that lit up the city in the 1860s lent a more literal bend to the famous sobriquet.

The Weather

Paris is typically pleasant and mild year-round. If you’re visiting during the summer, you can expect average highs in the 70s, though the occasional heat wave will lead to temperatures in the 80s. Winter is brisk but not often freezing, with average highs in the 40s. You won’t see much snow aside from a periodic flurry, though there may be a handful of freezing nights throughout the season. Paris sees about 25 inches of rain per year, most of it falling fairly steadily throughout the year, though summer may see a slightly higher concentration of precipitation.
