Your Guide to Nashville, TN

Nashville, the capital city of Tennessee, is situated in the middle of the state along the Cumberland River. Endearingly considered the birthplace of country music, Nashville has evolved into a hot spot for musical acts young and new. Brimming with political and cultural history, the best way to see the city is from behind the wheel of a cheap Nashville, TN car rental.

Out and About in Nashville

A trip through “Music City” must include a stop at Ryman Auditorium, located on 5th Avenue just a few blocks from the Cumberland River. This famous music hall, which is home to the Grand Ole Opry, has hosted some of country music’s most celebrated performers; for a special treat, book tickets to one of the shows after your tour. We also recommend touring the downtown area around Ryman and checking out the Tennessee State Capitol, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, and West Riverfront Park. All of these are within several blocks of one another, and are easy to reach with a car rental.

Not Just Nashville

Steer your rental car about 8 miles southwest of Nashville and make a stop at Belle Meade. This plantation, originally constructed in the early 1800s, is now a museum and event venue, and is an excellent way to get in touch with Tennessee’s history. For a real adventure, the great city of Memphis, TN is about 212 miles west. Make a road trip out of it and pay a visit to the Memphis Zoo, Graceland, and the legendary Sun Studio.

History of Nashville

The city is named for Francis Nash, an officer in the American Revolution. Its position on the Cumberland River made it a valuable port, and when the railroad arrived it continued to grow exponentially. After the Civil War—wherein it quickly fell to the Union—Nashville celebrated its expanding wealth and status by constructing a number of grand buildings, many of which remain downtown today. Nashville continued to grow into the 20th century, when it became the “capital of country music” after World War II. Its influence on country music continues, with much of its power centered in Music Row.

Nashville’s Weather

If you’re visiting Nashville in the winter, you can expect cool temperatures with average highs in the 40s and 50s. Nashville does experience some snow, though it averages only 6 or 7 inches per year. The rainy season kicks on in November, and often lasts through January; this is when Nashville receives the bulk of its 48 inches of rain per year. Summer is hot and dry, with average highs in the 70s and 80s. If you’re visiting in spring or fall, you can expect warm temperatures and a great deal of humidity.
