Your Guide to Mobile, AL

Welcome to Mobile, Alabama, also known as the Port City. With its eclectic skyline serving as a perfect backdrop to Mobile Bay, the Port City is a perfect example of antebellum charm combined with modern architecture. Explore every inch of its landscape, and that means not depending on public transit or cabs. Instead, invest in a cheap Mobile, AL car rental and see the city at your own pace.

Mobile in Mobile

Any trip to Mobile should include a visit to Battleship Memorial Park, located on Mobile Bay. The battleship U.S.S. Alabama is the primary attraction here; once you park your car rental, you can board “Mighty A” and learn about its contributions to World War II. Also at the park is the submarine U.S.S. Drum, as well as warplanes and memorials. You can spend a full day at the park, then enjoy a southern sunset while walking along one of the paths that overlooks Mobile Bay.
From the park, head about 3 miles west to Church Street. The Church Street East Historic District is located here, and it encompasses much of what was once the downtown area of 19th century Mobile. Here you’ll find shops, houses, and churches built between the 1820s and 1900, most of which have been beautifully restored. Should you get hungry, Government Street is just a block over, and is full of fast food, sit-down restaurants, and everything in between.

Outside Mobile

When you reserve one of the rental cars in Mobile, AL, you can explore much more than just the Port City. If you love nature, take a day trip to De Soto National Forest, located about 75 miles northwest of Mobile. This towering pine forest preserve is full of flora and fauna, and visitors can hike, canoe, and camp throughout its more than 500,000 acres.
If you’re in town for a while, you may consider heading for New Orleans, located 150 miles west of Mobile. New Orleans is home to Mardi Gras celebrations, beignets in the French Quarter, and, of course, the New Orleans Saints playing at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome®.

History of Mobile

By the time Alabama entered the United States in 1819, Mobile had already grown from a small French settlement into a town. Its position along the Mobile River and Mobile Bay made it an important trading hub, and it was quickly populated by merchants, doctors, lawyers, and others who benefited from a steady input and output of clientele. During the Civil War, the Battle of Mobile Bay led to the surrender of the city to the Union; Mobile itself escaped the war unscathed, and entered the 20th century as a major shipbuilding force.

Weather in Mobile

If you’re visiting Mobile in summer, you can expect hot, humid days accompanied by rain. June, July, and August see temperatures in the 80s and 90s, along with 6 to 7 inches of rain per month. Winter, meanwhile, is cool and pleasant, with average high temperatures in the 60s and about 4 to 5 inches of showers in January and February. All told, Mobile gets almost 70 inches of precipitation per year, and occasionally sees hurricanes and tropical storms. Snow is rare, but does occasionally fall in the depths of winter.
