Your Guide to Milwaukee, WI

You’re never too old or too young for Milwaukee. This lakeside city in Wisconsin is filled with parks, museums, and entertainment venues that range from tame to wildly exciting. Whether you’re traveling alone, with friends, or with your little ones, a trip to Cream City works with every budget and is sure to please everyone. Make your next trip to Cream City even better by reserving a cheap car rental in Milwaukee.

Exploring the City

No matter when you’re visiting, don’t spend your hard-earned money on taxis or tie yourself to public transportation schedules. Once you have picked up your Milwaukee car rental, you can drive all over the city and its surrounding area. Visit famous the city’s famous sights. The Milwaukee Art Museum contains some 30,000 works of art, and is a regular staple for both residents and visitors. The downtown area is ripe with things to visit; within a 2-mile radius are the Haggerty Museum of Art, the Grohmann Museum, the Milwaukee Public Museum, and Discovery World. If you’ve got kids with you, the latter two are excellent spots for children. Those who enjoy being outdoors can head to Lake Michigan for sailing, fishing, or simple walks along the shore – weather permitting, that is.
If you’re a baseball fan, odds are you’ve heard of the Milwaukee Brewers. They play over at Miller Park® during baseball season, usually sometime from April through October. The stadium is located close to the downtown area, so you’ll have plenty to do before and after catching a game.
Ready for a daytrip? If you’re feeling adventurous, take your car rental on a day trip to the state capital of Madison, some 80 miles west. Like Milwaukee, Madison is teeming with culture and nightlife, and if you’re visiting in the summer, its farmers market is an absolute must-see. You might also want to make a day trip to Chicago, IL, just 90 miles south of Milwaukee. The Windy City needs no introduction, so spend an afternoon exploring Navy Pier or the waterfront.

Made in “Milwacky”

Milwaukee has gone through a lot of name changes over the years—Melleorki, Milwarck, and, rather amusingly, Milwacky. In the 1830s, someone—possibly a newspaper—changed the name to “Milwaukee,” and the new spelling stuck. After a troubled period in the 1840s wherein Milwaukee engaged in several spats with nearby towns over territorial rights, population began to swell, largely thanks to cheap farmland. Today, a number of its older neighborhoods have been preserved and restored, including many of its “cream city brick” buildings. These structures were built out of clay from Lake Michigan, which turns a cream color as it bakes. At one point, these buildings were so prevalent the city took its nickname from them.

Great Lakes Weather

If you’re visiting Milwaukee in the summer, make sure you bring your umbrella. While the hot season brings temperatures in the 90s, it also sports strong thunderstorms. Winter is the season for light rain and a dusting of snow, but if you’re looking for a winter playland, Milwaukee might not be the place for you. Temperatures during the winter can drop into the 20s, though the 30s and 40s are much more regular.

The Right Car for You

When you reserve a car rental through CarRentals.com, you can count on a discount on practically any type of vehicle you need. Large groups can find cheap vans, while single travelers might prefer a small convertible to feel the wind of Lake Michigan through their hair. The sooner you reserve, the wider selection you will have. Reserve your rental car in Milwaukee through CarRentals.com today and cruise toward Cream City at your leisure.
