Your Guide to London, UK

A trip to the capital of England is a visit through thousands of years of history, culture, and education. Whether you’re here to wander through the halls of Oxford University or just want to enjoy a picnic overlooking the River Thames, a cheap car rental in London will help you see all the many sights in The Big Smoke.

Out and About

To get a good look at the city and its surrounding area, head for the London Eye. This giant Ferris wheel is over 440 feet tall, and it sits next to the Jubilee Gardens on the south bank of the Thames. A ride in one of its enclosed, climate-controlled pods will give you a dazzling view of the city no matter what time of day you visit. Almost directly adjacent to The Eye and the gardens is SEA LIFE London Aquarium, home to thousands of sea creatures, including sharks, penguins, and clownfish.
Just under 4 miles northwest of the aquarium is Madame Tussauds™. If you haven’t heard of this venue, stop by for a few hours to hang out with wax likenesses of celebrities and historical figures. Madame Tussauds is only a few blocks from The Regent’s Park, which hosts Queen Mary’s Gardens, an open air theatre, and numerous cafes. Learn about British tea time, stroll through beautiful rose gardens, and watch birds take off from the ponds in this quiet part of the bustling city. In addition, the London Zoo is on the northern border of Regent’s Park, and is a perfect place to bring yourself or your kids.

Beyond London

Rental cars in London mean you can skim past city limits and see the English countryside at will. Sixty-two miles to the northeast is Oxford, home to Oxford University and some of England’s most fascinating architecture. Tour the Radcliffe Camera, walk down High Street, and enjoy a picnic in South Park.
Lovers of literature and theatre will want to drive their London car rental 100 miles northeast, to Stratford-upon-Avon. The birthplace of William Shakespeare offers tours of his childhood home, as well as the cottage and beautiful gardens of his wife, Anne Hathaway. Take in a show at the Swan Theatre, or grab a meal at one of the restaurants or cafes on Sheep Street.

History of London

The area that became London saw steady inhabitation over the course of several thousand years, though the first major town was under Roman rule. London was subsequently ruled by Saxons and Vikings, and the various exploits of its later Plantagenet and Tudor kings and queens have been documented in numerous books and movies. In the 1700s, the advent of the printing press led to Fleet Street becoming the de facto home of England’s newspaper industry, which in turn helped propel London to its position as one of the intellectual beacons of the developing world.

The Weather

All four seasons in London tend to be mild compared to many other European cities. Summer is warm and pleasant, with average high temperatures in the 70s. In July and August, the city does see occasional spikes into the 80s, but rarely does the weather climb above 90 degrees. Winter is chilly but not cold; you can expect average highs in the 40s in December through March. London receives about 23 inches of rain per year, most of it during the fall and winter months. Spring brings slightly less rain and temperatures in the 50s.
