Your Guide to Lincoln, NE

There’s nothing quite like touring a capital city. Next time you visit the Cornhusker State, make a special stop in Lincoln, also known as the Star City. Explore its natural beauty, make a special stop at the zoo, or tour the campus of the University of Nebraska. You can do all this and more at your leisure with a cheap Lincoln, NE car rental.

Exploring Lincoln

Start your adventure at the Great Plains Art Museum, located on the outskirts of the university. All of the paintings, sculptures, and photography here are inspired by the Great Plains—the prairie and steppes between the Missouri River and the Rocky Mountains. If you’ve got the kids with you, a stop at the Lincoln Children’s Zoo, located 2.5 miles south of the museum, should be next on your list. Let your little ones learn about armadillos, pheasants, and numerous other creatures large and small during the zoo’s operating season between April and October.
For a taste of Lincoln’s famed outdoors, stop by MoPac Trail, which is named for the unused Missouri-Pacific Railroad track it follows. This 22-mile trail is open year-round; go hiking and biking during the summer to wind your way through grassy fields, trees, and over waterways, and enjoy cross-country skiing the snow-covered terrain in the winter.

Beyond Lincoln

Rental cars in Lincoln, NE don’t limit you to just the Star City. Head 52 miles northeast to Omaha to visit the Joslyn Art Museum, which first opened in 1931. The stunning Art Deco building houses artistic contributions of all sorts, ranging from ancient artwork to Native American pieces to modern contributions.
Ready to cheer on a sports team? Craft a trip within a trip and drive 190 miles southeast to Kansas City, MO. Lovers of football can watch the Kansas City Chiefs play at Arrowhead Stadium®, and baseball aficionados will have plenty of fun cheering for the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium®.

History of Lincoln

In 1856, Lincoln was a small village known as Lancaster. Its position near the salt flats made it interesting to salt companies, which, while never particularly successful, were nonetheless responsible for a great deal of settlement in the area. In the 1860s, Lancaster changed its name to Lincoln in honor of the then-recently deceased President Abraham Lincoln. This did cause a minor stir, as much of the population at the time had been sympathetic to the Confederacy. The late 1800s and much of the 20th century saw reform, along with new constructions to update the downtown area.

The Weather in Lincoln

Lincoln’s position on the Great Plains means it experiences cold winters and hot, humid summers. In summer, you can expect average high temperatures in the 80s and 90s, along with much of the state’s 28 annual inches of rain. This rain often arrives in the form of thunderstorms, which may also precede tornadoes. In winter, Lincoln sees average high temperatures in the 30s and 40s, and some 5 inches of snow in December, January, and February. Winter can bring days and nights below freezing, with some nights of sub-zero temperatures.
