Your Guide to Lancaster, PA

There’s much to see in The Red Rose City, so don’t spend your vacation there waiting on expensive taxis or trying to tailor your itinerary around the public transportation system. Instead, reserve a cheap Lancaster, PA car rental and see every inch of this beautiful, historic city at your leisure.

Lancaster at Your Leisure

Visit Demuth Museum, which is located downtown. It is housed in the former studio of celebrated painter Charles Demuth, and is home to a number of his pieces as well as selections from artists inspired by his work. From the museum, we recommend a visit to Penn Square, located just a few blocks west. The downtown area is also home to the Soldiers & Sailors monument, dedicated in 1874, and numerous museums and galleries to occupy your time.
In addition, pay a visit to the Lancaster Central Market. More than 50 vendors set up shop here on a daily basis, inviting you to sample cuisine from various cultures, among them Amish, German, and even Caribbean. The market has been in operation since 1742, when it was chartered by King George II.
While you’re in Lancaster, head about 4 miles east of downtown to the outskirts of Pennsylvania Dutch Country. Go on a buggy ride, learn about the Amish lifestyle, and, if you’re visiting during late winter or early spring, attend a Mud Sale. These vast sales and auctions are a great way to acquire crafts, furniture, and other Amish produce at a top price.

Beyond Lancaster

Car rentals in Lancaster, PA allow you to explore the great state of Pennsylvania. Thirty-three miles southeast of Lancaster is Hummelstown, which is home to the Indian Echoes Caverns. Venture into the subterranean limestone caverns and explore its hidden lakes and unique rock formations.
Alternatively, the city of York, PA is located 30 miles west of Lancaster. The White Rose City is home to Haines Shoe House, a shoe-shaped home that stands five stories tall. It was an architectural advertisement for a shoe salesman, but today it is a local museum and ice cream parlor—as well as a great place to snap a few pictures.

The History of Lancaster

Lancaster was named after its British counterpart, and takes its nickname—The Red Rose City—from the sigil of the Lancasters, an aristocratic family. The city was incorporated in 1819, and enjoyed a brief turn as the United States capital when the Continental Congress evacuated Philadelphia. Throughout the 19th century, Lancaster established an industry for itself, producing both the Pennsylvania long rifle and the Conestoga wagon. These items were used heavily by those moving west, and as the United States expanded, so did the Lancaster economy.

The Weather

Lancaster experiences cold, snowy winters and hot, often wet summers. If you’re visiting during the winter, you can expect up to 20 inches of snow, much of it in January and February, though it can appear in November. The season sees average highs in the 30s, and average lows in the 20s. Summer tends to be warm, with average high temperatures in the 80s and the occasional spike into the 90s. Lancaster receives much of its yearly 42 inches of rain during this season, as well. Spring and fall are warm and mild.
