The History of Lafayette

The first European settlers in Lafayette were the French-speaking Acadians. They were pushed out of Nova Scotia by the British in the 1700s, and re-established themselves in what became Lafayette. Officially named Lafayette Parish in the 1820s, the community survived the Civil War and a bout with yellow fever before the railroad arrived. As a stop on the link between Houston, TX and New Orleans, LA, Lafayette enjoyed renewed commerce and a swelling population. In the 1940s, Lafayette capitalized on its proximity to oil drilling, and it remains a prominent figure in the industry today.
