Your Guide to Key West, FL

If you’ve got beaches, warm turquoise water, and a relaxed vibe on your mind, then your next vacation should include a stop in Key West. Get around “The Conch Republic” and its surrounding keys much easier with a cheap Key West car rental.

Cruising Key West

With only about 7.4 square miles, it is easy to navigate around the island of Key West via a car rental. Start out your trip with a visit to Smathers Beach, which is full of the white sand and warm waves Florida is so famous for. Join in a game of volleyball, or rent a jet ski and race your friends.
Toward the southern end of Key West is the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum. Hemingway spent over a decade living in this house, and you can tour its interiors, see the area where Hemingway worked on his books, and even meet some cats that might be descended from his faithful pets.
At the end of the day, stop by Mallory Square, located on the southwestern tip of Key West. Here you’ll find the Key West Aquarium, several pubs and eateries, and the Sunset Celebration on Sunset Pier. The party begins about two hours before sunset, and includes food and live music for all.

Outside Key West

Key West car rentals mean you can explore the rest of the Florida Keys and beyond—so why not embark on a miniature road trip? The island chain is connected to mainland Florida via a 113-mile stretch of Highway 1. Wind your way across the Atlantic Ocean and stop off in the areas that interest you. Go diving in Key Largo, have a picnic on Pigeon Key, and go boating on Marathon.
Should you wish to go a little further, Miami is located 160 miles north of Key West. Visit its legendary beaches, tour the University of Miami campus, and do a little shopping at Aventura Mall. If you’re a sports lover, we recommend watching the Miami Heat play at American Airlines Arena®, or catch the Miami Marlins trying to hit home runs at Marlins Park®.

The History of Key West

Key West, just like the rest of the Florida Keys, was traded back and forth between the Spanish and the English as they warred over the area. Eventually the island was sold to the United States Navy, and it became a port of entry for the young country. The island’s inhabitants created an industry around salvaging the ships wrecked on the surrounding reefs, but tourism also provided a small boost to the economy, as many came to the keys to escape colder weather in the north. Over the decades, tourism continued to grow as salvaging and other industries shrank, and today the vacation sector is the key’s primary industry.

The Weather

Key West features the warm, often muggy weather known in Florida. Humidity is a fairly constant, fluctuating between 72 and 76 percent throughout the year. During winter, you can expect average high temperatures in the 70s. Summer sees average high temperatures in the 80s and 90s, along with much of the area’s 40 inches of annual rainfall. During summer, rain often appears in quick morning downpours, which are swiftly replaced by sunny skies. While Key West does not often face hurricanes, they do make occasional appearances during the summer season.
