If you’re visiting in October, drive around town to take in the glory of the Keene Pumpkin Festival. This is the time of year when the residents of Keene try to gather the largest number of lit jack-o’-lanterns in one place; these masses of carved pumpkins often number 30,000 or more. Even if you’re not visiting around Halloween, you’ll find plenty to do in Keene. Take in some local history at the Horatio Colony House Museum; this stately home, built in 1806, once belonged to one of Keene’s most important families. Once you’ve toured the museum, the surrounding nature preserve boasts over 600 acres of forest and swamp to hike and explore.
