Your Guide to Indianapolis, IN

If you love car racing, you’re about to visit the right place. Indianapolis is home to the infamous Indianapolis 500™ and the Brickyard 400™, and the NHRA U.S. Nationals® draw thousands of guests to Indianapolis every year. Indianapolis is also home to the Colts, the Pacers, and the Indiana Fever WNBA team. Sporting teams aren’t the only reason to visit this vibrant city, though, as you’ll discover when you book a cheap Indianapolis car rental to explore the area.

Into Indianapolis

Lovers of military history will find much to do in the downtown area, as Indianapolis has more war memorials than any other city in the United States outside of Washington D.C. The Indiana World War Memorial Plaza, located downtown, includes the American Legion Mall, Cenotaph Square, the Veterans Memorial Plaza, and the War Memorial, all of which pay homage to Indiana residents who fought for the country. Other points of interest in the city are the Children's Museum of Indianapolis, the Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library, and the Slippery Noodle Inn, which serves up hot jazz instead of noodles.

In-Depth in Indiana

Choose your rental car in Indianapolis based on what you’ll be using it for. Pick an economy car to save money on gas as you motor down the city streets—we don’t recommend trying to join in on the 500, though you can certainly drive yourself to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway® some 5 miles west of Circle Center. For watersports, you can head 150 miles north to South Bend, which sits on the shores of Lake Michigan. Alternatively, if you’re traveling in the winter, you may want an all-terrain vehicle to haul your flock about 170 miles east to Columbus, Ohio to see its German Village transformed into a snow-covered wonderland.

The History of Indianapolis

Before the Indy 500™, there was the Governor’s Circle. This circle-shaped common area was established at the center of Indianapolis in the 1820s while the city was built up around it. The arrival of the Madison and Indianapolis Railroad in 1847 connected the city to the rest of the growing country, and Indianapolis’ central location led to it becoming something of a transportation hub for the Midwest. By the turn of the 20th century, Indianapolis had grown a large automobile industry centered around fast cars. In 1911, the first Indianapolis 500 kicked off; Indianapolis has been at the forefront of car racing ever since.

Hot Summers, Cold Winters

What you see and do in the Circle City depends largely on what season you visit in. If you arrive in summer, you can expect temperatures ranging from the 70s to the 90s, with plenty of humidity sticking to the air. Spring and fall are largely mild, though sudden spikes up or down are frequent, and May can be quite wet. Winters are a delightfully chilly wonderland, with up to 36 inches of snow and high temperatures reaching the 30s and 40s.
