Your Guide to Grand Cayman

Surrounded by the stunning Caribbean Sea, Grand Cayman and the Cayman Islands are the perfect place for a tropical getaway. Although each island is unique, Grand Cayman makes for an ideal vacation, and there’s no better way to see its beautiful beaches and lush landscape than by reserving a cheap Grand Cayman car rental.

Getting Around Grand Cayman

Grand Cayman is only 76 square miles, so a Grand Cayman car rental is your ticket to traveling from beach to beach. We recommend heading for Seven Mile Beach, located along the western end of Grand Cayman. Seven Mile Beach invites you to walk along the pristine coral sand, snorkel on offshore reefs, or barbecue your lunch at one of the available barbecues.
If you don’t want to cook up your own meal at the beach, drive down West Bay Road. This highway traverses much of the western side of Grand Cayman and runs through the capital city of George Town, and en route you’ll have access to numerous resorts, restaurants, pubs, and island shopping.

The Greater Island

While Grand Cayman is relatively small, it still has much for you to see. Hop into your car rental and head 15 miles east of George Town to Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park. This little area of paradise is full of tropical plants and flowers for you to admire. Walk by the lake, check out a number of native birds and other species, and learn about some of the ongoing conservation efforts at the park.
Twenty miles east of George Town is Austin Conolly Drive. This road runs along the eastern coast of the island, and provides access to additional beaches and restaurants. If you follow the road, it will take you along the eastern edge of Grand Cayman, eventually depositing you at Rum Point Beach. Play volleyball, take a nap in a hammock, and just enjoy a slower pace of life.

History of Grand Cayman

The Cayman Islands were settled by Europeans in the 16th century. They first drew the attention of seafarers due to the tremendous number of turtles that lived just offshore. These turtles proved edible, and ships often stopped by the Cayman Islands to capture them for fresh meat. The islands were additionally populated by “Caymanas,” or crocodiles, and the chain eventually took their full name from this aquatic reptile. Over the decades, the Cayman Islands became a popular hideout for pirates, and were also settled by European refugees and escaped slaves.

The Weather

Grand Cayman enjoys a warm, tropical climate identical to that of its sister islands. Average highs during the winter are in the 70s and 80s. Winter also tends to be the island’s dry season. Summer brings thunderstorms and rain showers, along with average high temperatures in the 80s and 90s. Grand Cayman’s rainy season lasts from May through October, bringing with it 55 inches of rain. Those who intend to do some swimming or diving will be pleased to learn that the average oceanic temperatures also tend to be in the 70s and 80s.
