For a look at some local history, head to where West Dixie Avenue meets North Main Street, at the corner of the courthouse square. In 1862, a Civil War battle was fought here, and one cannonball from that battle remained embedded in the wall of the Depp Building for decades afterward. The building you see it lodged in today is a replacement, as the Depp Building collapsed in the late 1800s. Once you’ve snapped some pictures of the cannonball, the rest of Elizabethtown awaits. If taking a stroll through the nearby Elizabethtown Nature Park doesn’t interest you, then drive your rental car about 45 miles north on I-65 to Louisville, and book a steamboat cruise on the Ohio River.
