Your Guide to Detroit, MI

Detroit is known for its contributions to the automotive industry, having long been the home of several prominent American car brands. But this booming city is also a regional center for art, culture, and trade. Rather than entrust your Motor City vacation to the whims of public transit, see all the sights on your own time with a cheap car rental in Detroit.

Driving Through Detroit

Two worlds collide at the Detroit Museum of Contemporary Art. MOCAD is housed in the shell of an auto dealership, combining the city’s history as an automotive mecca with its future as a cultural icon. Exhibits rotate through, and MOCAD also offers a number of creative-themed events throughout the year.
Just over a mile south of MOCAD is the Fox Theatre, an art deco masterpiece that opened in 1928. While it maintains its ornate decoration and feel, the Fox hosts a number of very modern live performances, including music groups and comedy acts.
Detroit didn’t just build its reputation around automobiles, although that may be what it is remembered for. Five miles south of the Fox Theatre is the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, located on Belle Isle in the middle of the Detroit River. Steer your Detroit car rental across Loiter Way and to The Strand, and spend some time wandering through the museum’s numerous exhibits, which include a collection of model ships and additional artifacts from the maritime history of the Great Lakes.
If you’re a sports aficionado, you’ll find plenty to enjoy in Detroit. It is home to no fewer than four professional sports teams. Watch the Detroit Tigers play at Comerica Park®, cheer on the Detroit Lions at Ford Field®, or see the Detroit Pistons take on all comers at The Palace of Auburn Hills®. Still not satisfied? The Detroit Red Wings play hockey at Joe Louis Arena®.

Beyond Detroit

The car rentals in Detroit mean you can travel beyond the Motor City. Why not explore the rest of Michigan, or even other nearby states? Ann Arbor is located about 40 miles west, and is the perfect place for a day trip. Take a tour of the University of Michigan, followed by a picnic at one of Ann Arbor’s many public parks.
Go a little further with a visit to Cleveland, OH, located 170 miles southeast of Detroit. Visit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, score an outstanding bargain at the West Side Market, or watch the Cleveland Browns or Cleveland Indians play at First Energy Stadium® and Progressive Field®, respectively.

The History of Detroit

Detroit was officially incorporated in 1815, after being passed between the British and American forces in the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. Its location along the Great Lakes quickly made it a hub for transportation, shipping, and shipbuilding, and in the early 1900s, it became the headquarters for Ford Motor Company. Over the ensuing decades, Detroit also hosted Dodge, Chrysler, and numerous other major automobile manufacturers. This led to the “boom years” of American muscle cars during the 1950s through the ’60s. In recent years, Detroit has undertaken several projects to preserve its older buildings downtown, as well as revitalize the city for new generations.

The Weather in Detroit

Detroit sees distinct summer and winter seasons. If you’re visiting during the summer, you can expect average highs in the 70s and 80s, along with over three inches of rain per month. Overall, Detroit receives about 33 inches of rain per year, most of it during the summer. Winter is cold, with average high temperatures in the 30s, and about 42 inches of snowfall. Most of the snow arrives in January and February. Spring and fall tend to be warm and pleasant, though fierce spring and summer storms make occasional appearances as the weather heats up.
