The History of Dayton

Dayton, OH is named for Captain Jonathan Dayton, a Revolutionary War officer who owned a large portion of land in the area. While it was settled in 1796 by a group traveling up from Cincinnati, the city was not incorporated until 1805, and its growth period did not begin until the late 1820s, when the Dayton-Cincinnati Canal opened trade to Cincinnati.
