Your Guide to Dallas, TX

Dallas, Texas is a popular vacation spot for tourists all over the country. The city is filled with plenty of fun things to see and do. Sports fans can enjoy football, baseball, basketball, hockey, and soccer, but there’s something for everyone in this lively section of the Lone Star State. Make sure your next trip to Dallas is both fun and affordable by reserving a cheap car rental in Dallas through CarRentals.com today.

History of Dallas

Originally inhabited by the Caddo, along with various other Native American tribes, the area that became Dallas was claimed by Spain in the 18th century. Mexico broke away from Spain in 1821, taking Dallas (and Texas) with it; in 1836, the Republic of Texas turned on Mexico and became its own nation until it was annexed by the U.S. in 1845. Since then, Dallas has experienced ups and downs. It was hit hard in the Depression, enjoyed a real estate boom in the 1970s and ’80s, and has established a foothold in the tech industry.

Drive Through Dallas

While in Dallas itself, explore the city’s culture in the Arts District, located in the downtown area. A must-see stop is the Dallas Museum of Art, which features artistic expression dating back to 3,000 B.C. Less than a mile east of the museum is another famed learning landmark: The Perot Museum of Nature and Science. Wander through its 11 halls and study exhibits about everything from the expanding universe to the human experience. Eight miles northeast of the Arts District is the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden, which is a beautiful place for photo ops and quiet reflection.
Downtown Dallas isn’t the only appealing aspect of the Lone Star State. Sure, you can get around on public transportation, but why tie your vacation to someone else’s schedule? Grab a car rental and go where you want, when you want. If you’re a football fan, head to the stadium in Arlington, 20 miles west, to cheer on the Dallas Cowboys. Just 35 miles west of Dallas are the Fort Worth Stockyards, which offer a memorable experience for children of all ages, particularly the cattle drive that is held twice each day. If you’d like to explore the great outdoors, 137 miles south of Dallas is beautiful Belton Lake; an additional 60 or so miles past that is the city of Austin and its booming music scene.

The Doppler on Dallas

When visiting Dallas in the summer, make sure you bring plenty of sunscreen and shorts; temperatures easily reach into the 90s from June through August, only beginning to cool down in September. Heat spikes during the warmer months can shoot the temperature over 100 degrees, so be prepared to sweat. Even in winter, Dallas doesn’t get very cold. In December and January, temperatures might drop into the 30s at night, but the average daily temperature is in the 50s and 60s. Occasionally, colliding weather systems will lead to freezing rain, which can bring the city to a stop.
