History of Corpus Christi

Corpus Christi began life as a small trading post called Kinney’s Ranch, named for General Henry Lawrence Kinney. The name was changed to Corpus Christi in 1847, and it was incorporated as a city shortly thereafter. During the Civil War, when Texas seceded from the Union, Corpus Christi was bombarded by warships and suffered severe damage. By the 1930s, the Port of Corpus Christi had opened, creating new jobs and leading to influx of settlers. The presence of the Corpus Christi Naval Air Station helped lead to additional population growth as airmen settled in the area with their families.

The Weather

Corpus Christi has a humid subtropical climate, which leads to fairly steady weather throughout the year. If you’re visiting during the summer, expect average highs in the 90s, though spikes into 100 degrees Fahrenheit and up are not uncommon. Fall begins a cooling trend that lasts through the winter. The “cold season” is quite pleasant in Corpus Christi, as temperatures bottom out in the 50s and 60s. Corpus Christi only gets about 31 inches of rain per year, most of it from May through October.
