History of Columbia, South Carolina

Columbia got its start as a city when the South Carolina General Assembly approved a bill for a new capital city. Since the area that became Columbia was located in the center of the state, it could serve as a hub for trade and transportation. When the Santee Canal was completed in 1800, Columbia had a water route to Charleston, SC, which in turn led to tremendous business growth. Columbia continued to develop over the decades, and though much of it was destroyed at the end of the Civil War, it rebuilt and grew prosperous. Today, much of its postwar architecture has been preserved, making it a popular place for history lovers.
