Your Guide to Colorado Springs, CO

The Pikes Peak Gold Rush brought fortune seekers to Colorado Springs in search of riches in the 1800s. You, however, will likely be more appreciative of the clean air, open space, and breathtaking mountain views Colorado is now famed for. If you're a nature lover, explore a variety of hiking trails or consider a challenging climb up the majestic Pikes Peak. With a cheap Colorado Springs car rental at your disposal, you can explore both the metropolitan hub of the city as well as the rugged terrain of the mountains at your leisure.

All About the Springs

Whether you want to marvel at natural wonders or visit iconic landmarks, car rentals in Colorado Springs ensure you have a reliable way to reach your favorite parts of Colorado Springs. Visit the Ghost Town Museum, Colorado Springs Pioneer Museum, and the Cottonwood Center for the Arts, all located right in the downtown area. For a real treat, park your car rental off Colorado Avenue and check out the Old Colorado City Historic District. Explore its wine bars, check out the offerings in the winter ice sculpting competition, or just browse through the many shops.
You can find activities just outside the city, too. Four miles northwest of the city is the Garden of the Gods, a spectacular series of stone formations that will leave you reaching for your camera. Additionally, 10 miles north of Colorado Springs is the U.S. Air Force Academy, where you can explore the stunning Cadet Chapel and take a self-guided tour of the campus. To further enjoy the beauty of the state, take a day trip up I-25N to Denver. The capital is just 70 miles north of Colorado Springs, and you’ll pass through some breathtaking scenery en route.

History of Colorado Springs

The Pikes Peak Gold Rush attracted a great deal of attention to the Colorado Springs area. Some 100,000 “Fifty-Niners” descended upon the area, settling in the various camps and towns until Colorado Springs was set down in 1879. The area’s beautiful mountainous landscape quickly attracted creative types, as well as another sort of visitor: those with consumption. Nearby mineral springs, lots of sunshine, and fresh mountain air meant Colorado Springs and Pikes Peak were the perfect places for tubercular patients to attempt recovery in the years before antibiotics. The same things that made Colorado Springs so tempting for victims of consumption continues to draw many (healthy) visitors and residents today.

Clean Mountain Air

Clean air isn’t all Colorado Springs has to offer. You can expect 300 days of sunshine a year, even when the temperature drops in winter, so bring sunblock and a hat. December and January tend to be the coldest months of the year, but during winter temperatures average in the 40s and 50s. The city receives some 40 inches of snow per season, most of it arriving in March. The temperature in summer ranges from the 70s into the 80s, though a few days in the 90s are not unheard of. Make sure you bring your umbrella during July and August, as afternoon thunderstorms strike frequently.
