Driving Around Cincinnati

Once you rent a car in Cincinnati, you can start planning the rest of your vacation. There’s plenty to do in downtown Cincinnati within a five-mile radius; the Cincinnati Art Museum is one of the top free museums of the country with works from the likes of Renoir, Titian, and Picasso. The American Sign Museum is a unique choice, featuring the history of signs. You could also travel to the Cincinnati Zoo, the Clifton Cultural Arts Center, or Findlay Market, the vast farmers market on Race Street.
If you’re a football aficionado visiting during the season, head for Paul Brown Stadium®, located right near the Ohio River, and catch a Cincinnati Bengals game. Baseball fans are also in for a treat, as right down the street is the Great American Ball Park℠, where the Cincinnati Reds hold court.
Take a day or two and explore what else the Midwest has to offer. Twenty-five miles south of Cincinnati is Big Bone Lick State Historic Site. Located in Union, Kentucky, Big Bone Lick is home to numerous fossil discoveries, many of which are still on display. Stay on your historic kick when you steer 55 miles north to Dayton, OH for a taste of the Old West when you visit Carillon Historical Park.
If you’re a fan of car racing, you can’t go wrong with an adventure to Indianapolis. The capital city of neighboring Indiana is just over 100 miles northwest of Cincinnati. In addition, if you want to see more of the great Midwest, you may choose to fly to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) and rent a car from there. Why stick to one city when you can road trip through two cites and 240 beautiful miles?

Down in Porkopolis

Cincinnati gets its name after “The Society of the Cincinnati,” a group dedicated to preserving the ideals of Revolutionary War officers. Since it was the first city founded after the American Revolution, the name is quite fitting. The advent of the Miami and Erie Canal in the 1820s meant Cincinnati could benefit from the river trade, and its position as “queen” of that industry further solidified its famous nickname. Its other, slightly less famous nickname is Porkopolis, handed down in 1835, when Cincinnati enjoyed a brief stint as the country’s largest hog packing center.

Sun and Showers

What you do in Cincinnati will likely be dictated by the season you opt to pay your visit. If you arrive in winter, you can expect up to 22 inches of snow and cold temperatures ranging from the 20s to the 40s. Spring is mild and wet, and gives way to a hot, humid summer and temperatures averaging in the 70s but quite easily reach the 90s. Summer is also known as storm season, and sudden thunderstorms are not uncommon during the warmer months.
